Nimoy as Spock - Poor Direction or Poor Editing? (SPOILERS)

So, I felt they wasted Nimoy's part. My review (see link to my site below) notes in more detail, but in short, I felt he was rushed. Do you think this is a direction issue or, as I am getting to think after reflection, a poor editing job?

Heck, I guess I should ask, did anyone else notice this, especially in the final scene where he is with Quinto?

No, I didn't have any problem with Nimoy's scenes - although I understand that he was a little unhappy with his performance in that final scene with Quinto (it was actually the first scene he filmed).

I liked him for the most part. The last scene with the younger Spock wasn't as good as it could have been. But other than that it was solid.

I agree... felt that he did not even need to be there the way they wasted his appearances especially at the end. They could have went without that but I guess it was like a christening.

I am in total agreement - Nimoy as Spock was an addition to the plot that, as he said, was needlessly self serving. He simply didn't need to be in the movie, and his scenes were not that good.

That said, the movie was pretty much awesome.

Nimoy stole the show, and got one of the three scenes that brought tears to my eyes. I'd say that's a pretty good job.

I thought Nimoy's scenes were excellent and some of the best in the film.He was at ease, filling his role perfectly and was an excellent way to pay respect to the past Trek as a new adventure begins.

I don't think he was extraneous at all. Was he the focus of the story? No, of course not. It's not about him. But he provided a good deal of context and a nice passing of the torch. If only GEN had handled Kirk as well as they did Spock here.

Yes. Couldn't agree more.

He was wonderful. I can't believe they gave us that ending.

Watching it again should assauge any minor nitpicks I have about his performance/integration in the story. First time around, there's just so much to take in.

Interesting, I thought he was on screen a LOT! He really pointed everyone in the right direction this film, Kirk and Spock. I think you're way off.

He was the shepherd that made sure everything would be alright; I'd say he completed his job wonderfully.

The last shot of the movie took us to the status quo of the series, which was (dare I say?) the logical place for this movie to conclude.

I thought there was something deeply poetic about finding ancient-Spock in an ice cavern, as opposed to just a starship or something like that. He was even carrying a torch -- but I don't think he passed it onto the young Kirk, literally.

I thought it was too self-referential. A character who shouldn't have been in the movie constantly saying "hey look it's me in the movie".

I didn't have a problem with him being in the movie, but I was definitely taken aback by how weak and raspy his voice was throughout.

I know that's what Nimoy sounds like now, but somehow hearing that same voice come out of Spock was... strange.

I thought his scenes on Delta Vega were good...the one on Earth towards the end was kinda weird. The image was a little unfocused and I thought the delivery of the "implied" line was a little stilted, unlike the similar lines from Star Trek VI.

I am so eternally greatful that Spock Prime was not killed in this movie. He now stands as the architect of New Vulcan, and with his experiences of the fal-tor-pan will be essential to maintain the ancient beliefs and ceremonies.

I hope that he is involved in the next film as establishing new vulcan, whilst being protected by Starfleet from a new Enemy, hoping to finish the job of eradicating all Vulcans that Nero started.

And perhaps in a third film, we could see Spock coming to the end of his life, and requesting the help of Young Spock and Kirk etc, to take him back to Vulcan in his time, a final mind meld with Sarek to empart knowledge of Sarek Prime, and then Young Spock getting closure as he stands on Vulcan which hadn't been destroyed, etc. A sort of Search for Spock, but about Spocks final journey, home...

The more I think about it, the moreI think his appearance was essential, not just to the plot of the film, but for connecting it to what we knew, and making it timeless.
