Nicholas Meyer Confirms Upcoming 4K UHD Release Plans for STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN

It doesn't default to the Director's cut. From the opening menu when you hit "play" and it then asks you to choose Director's or theatrical. How is that a default? A default would be you hit play and the Director's cut starts right up.
In a default scenario, you would have to travel to another menu to even find the theatrical.

I popped in the disc and what do you know -- I couldn't access the Coto commentary from the main page. I selected the theatrical version and THEN was able to play the commentary. Maybe a minor but easily solvable glitch.
Weird design. Why include it on the menu if you can't access it directly from there?

The other poster is not a dummy, nor does he not know how to operate a remote or a Bluray player.
Thanks for the benefit of the doubt. :)

The menu is not logical.
You put in the disc. You select extras. You try to chose the "Coto commentary" and it DOES NOT allow you to
Agreed. It makes no sense. Apparently the quality control on this BluRay was not what it should have been.

I watched it the other night, It was beautiful but I did notice two things that were different from the 2002 Directors Edition DVD.

The Regula planetoid is blue where It should have been Brown. (I think.)
And during the Mutara Nebula battle, when Kirk is coming up the ladder he doesn't say "That young man is my son." And Spock replying "Fascinating." is also omitted.

Other than that, It's the best version of TWOK out there. I'm proud to own it.

That was an intentional change by Meyer. Not too surprising, considering how half-assed Nimoy's line reading was in that scene.

That makes sense. Kirk already seemed to know David is his son so Spock would most likely know that too.
From what I understand, the Genesis Cave scene between Kirk and Carol Marcus was rescripted & reshot to make it clear that Kirk did know that he had a son. Apparently, that was ambiguous in the original cut.

I don't believe they ever gave David's age onscreen, but I find it interesting to note that both Spock & McCoy are previously acquainted with Carol (Spock knows her by sight on the Genesis proposal tape & they recognize and greet each other in the transporter room, and McCoy has his "When it rains, it pours" comment in the turbolift, showing that he is also aware of Carol's significance to Kirk). That right there indicates that it's likely Spock & McCoy each have known Kirk for 20-25 years by the time of TWOK.

There have been two takes on that in the literature over the years:

1) Carol was the 'little blond lab technician' Gary Mitchell pointed at Kirk in Starfleet Academy. (This was in a Peter David-written DC annual.) And as we now know from the Abramsverse movie, Kirk could well have met and hung out with Spock and McCoy back then, so that's how they all know each other.
2) Michael Jan Friedman wrote a TOS-era novel postulating Kirk encountering Carol and her now elementary-school aged son David while on a mission, and Spock and McCoy become acquainted with Carol then.

Even without an express explanation (although I do like the Gary Mitchell one personally, which also appears in the book Enterpise) Carol is the leading scientist in her field, it would make sense Spock would know who she is, and McCoy would have access to Kirk's medical records so would know about Carol and his son, assuming Kirk didn't just tell them over the previous 15, 20 years.

As originally scripted AND SHOT no one knew they were father and son -- not Kirk, Spock, McCoy or David. Carol had kept that a secret.
In that version, the jeffrey tube dalogue made sense. He was telling Spock something he himself just found out.
I see that more and more people are finding out about the workprint at UCLA that has all the deleted scenes.

In the novelization Kirk finds out when Carol stops David from killing him.

My problem with the director's cut is that I like the extra scenes, but I like the original takes (such as "what about the rest of the inspection?") better. So I tend to stick with the theatrical.

I do miss Scotty's "Why?!?" though.

How tall is Ike Eisenmann? He's like a head shorter than Shatner! (Or was Kirk standing on something?)

In the script and as originally shot -- not just the novel.
I could never watch the movie without McCoys added lines. In Kirk's appt, arguing with Spock in Kirk's cabin, in the sickbay after Preston dies. Those are forever part of the movie for me.
Preston was 14 in the script, so they hired an extremly short actor. Very true.

Is there any information floating out there to indicate how many of the actual film prints did not have the "II" in the title? I know there were some -- I saw the movie in my small-town movie theater, and I'm positive the title simply read Star Trek The Wrath of Khan.

What about Kirk's line? "I did what you wanted, I stayed away."

That line (and the 2nd half of the Kirk-David scuffle) was reshot.

In the workprint Kirk says the originally scripted line -- "Why didn't you tell ME?"

The reshot fight adds Kirk's line -- "Is that David?" -- as well.

Those two added lines are enough to establish Kirk knew all along.
Voila, entire subplot changed. Kirk knew and went with Carol's wish to stay away.

Just got the blu-ray. So refreshing to have a simple menu with beauty shots of the best Enterprise - and no annoying music.

I'll give the Director's Cut a spin tonight.

Some stores in my area are still selling the faulty version of the blu ray. :scream:

This has been released to retail in Australia now, no idea if its the corrected version or the one with the mistakes.
