This hurts more than the other TOS stars who have passed. I’m not sure why, and I don’t say that to diminish the others passings. But dang, she was an icon.
Nichelle was a progressive icon of her time, smashing ceilings for black women at a time when neither black people nor women were supposed to be officers on the deck of a starship equal to their male and white colleagues. Truly she must have inspired millions. Martin Luther King said as much.
So sad that she's left us but so happy she was with us.
May rewatch "Of Gods and Men", a Star Trek fan film starring Nichelle. It's... not great. But it's the only time (that I know of) that Nichelle got to play Uhura as one of the story's movers, rather than a supporting character, and she does have a few good scenes.
