Nice article about ST:TOS sound effects

I have the GNP sound fx CD, which is great as an archive, but there's an irony to it. The sounds that gave credibility and "life" to props have no life on their own. Without the actors and stories to go with it, the fx album has an empty quality that actually creeps me out after a while. Sound fx were a vital part of the show, but they were never meant to stand alone. Still, I'm glad to own the CD.

In a similar vein, a sound fx collection from the Irwin Allen sci-fi shows is also on CD:

I wish there was more info out there on the show's sound effects. There has been some written over the years, but not in an amount that we are accustomed to seeing in other areas of the show's production.

A lot of TV shows after Trek have used their sound effects to great effect! Logan's Run, Futurerama and numerous TV sci-fi pilots!

I've lately been rewatching The Twilight Zone and I'm amused by how many TOS sounds were used there first. Including the "Bridge ambiance" that I so firmly associate with Trek. It's almost jarring to hear it on an earlier production for another show.

(In the the episode, the story is set in a crashed rocket which not only used the familiar bridge background noise, but also had banks of control consoles that borrowed the pie-shaped displays from the Krell lab in Forbidden Planet. Great stuff.)

I can't decide which door opening sound I've heard more...the one from Star Trek or the one from Doom.

Guess which one inspired the other. :p

It was sort of jarring--for Trek is what they are best known for. The photon torpedo sound wasn't on Trek first--but to me--it should only be used for those torpedoes.

Eno made a name for himself with found sounds:

Some record the sounds of bridges during traffic--bridge songs http://www.theworldaccordingtosound.org/
