NHL Discussion - 2009-2010 Season

As long as they finish at least in the middle of the pack, I'll be happy. I'd hate to see Boston get a top five first round pick in next summer's draft due to that trade for Kessel.

Yeah, agreed. I think the Kessel deal will pay off, long term. I mean, he's currently about a point-per-game player, on pace for 40 goals on his (shortened) season, and he's clearly given the rest of the team a confidence boost. Even with a top five pick, there's no guarantee of getting someone who can provide that kind of impact within a few years.

It's kinda hard to pay attention to the Sharks when they are sucking a lot right now.
There are plenty of Leafs and Flyers fans on this board who will surely hurt you in many unique and painful ways should you try to start a pity party for a team one point out of first place.

Just a warning. ;)

I'm not implicating any other fanbases though. Also, I looked at the Leafs standings and they are coming back to respectability so that's gotta be worth something. It's just the Sharks have lost 5 in a row and haven't looked good doing it. I know it's early, and there are a lot of teams doing worse, but as a fan I still have to wonder.

There were three fights in the first five minutes of the Flyers-Penguins game. The rest was predictable and showed how terrible a team the Flyers are right now, though.

The three fights were less than 15 seconds (game time) apart. I can't remember the last time I saw 3 back-to-back fights at the beginning of a hockey game.

Rumors from a Flyers sportswriter on radio today:
A lot of scouts have been at the Flyers' games recently due to rumors that Philly may trade Carter to shake things up. The decision could come down how poorly they do against Pittsburgh these two games.

Any thoughts?

I don't follow. The Wings are on a roll, in spite of a boatload of injuries. They've fought hard and snagged 8th after being in the basement for two months. Why get angry now?

Normally I would say don't trade our talented players, but at this point, I have no friggin clue. The whole team looks terrible.

Seems like a stupid way to mix things up by trading one of your two bonafide young stars.

...because they should be in first place or at least a close second in their division.

After an overtime loss to the Pens, I'm a bit more forgiving of them (could still use a win, though). Right now my vote is to give the new coach a chance with the current team and, if that doesn't work, shake up the team in the off season.

The ice is down in Fenway for the Winter Classic. It looks good! It looks like the seats are right on top of the glass, just like they should be. I would love to go to one of these games.

I'd love to go to an outdoor NHL game. That could make for a perfect winter day. If I snuck in my own beer.

My parents went to the 2008 Classic and loved it. I can't say I'm too thrilled about sitting outside in sub-freezing weather for several hours, but I'd do it for a chance to watch hockey in Fenway Park.

Anyone watch the Winter Classic? Heck of an ending. Really did the NHL and the game of Hockey proud. And then announcing Team USA was great too.

I really like the idea of the Winter Classic. Three have gone off without an interruption and I think this is one of the smart things Bettmen has done. Hopefully he doesn't ruin it by adding too much more, even though I do agree, there should be a Canadian outdoor game also during the season. They were the ones who invented the sport afterall, or so it seems.

^ I watched the Winter Classic and I really enjoyed it. And yeah, there definitely should be one for Canadian teams as well.

WHOO Bruins!

I sympathize with the Cadians who want a second outdoor game. Sad thing is, to lure in casual US viewers you need at least one US team. That said, I don't like the idea of multiple Winter Classics every year. I'm fine, though, with a second Winter Classic if it doesn't become a regular thing. The NHL seems to be leaning that way, too.

Alright folks: Prediction time! Guess next year's Winter Classic(s).

US: Avalanche @ Kings (in Dodger Stadium) ;)
CA: Canucks @ Maple Leafs (in the Blue Jays' stadium)

I can't see them sticking it in LA. Far too warm. No idea who it would be, though, of the top of my head.

Can't see a game at Dodger Stadium- even if they were able to put down ice, it'd probably turn to slush soon after.

I heard that the Wild are pushing for an outdoor game at the new Target Field next year, so that's my prediction.
