Thanks folks. Not trying to be all 'whoa is me,' but sports can really be a nice distraction and pick you up when you're down.

I hear you. I got the call from my sister just before halftime during the Cowboys / Bears game on September 19; after the Bears beat Dallas, I had to smile, because my Dad had this enormous, undying hatred for Jerry Jones. I guess that stubborn bastard had to win something on his last day. :)

Yesterday was probably the worst day of my life, as my father died. That Pats game was a little distraction and ray of sunshine on an otherwise dreary day.

Man, that sucks dude. I'm so sorry for your loss and you're also in my thoughts. :(

Well that's easy to say when your team is the Patriots. :) Try being a KC fan and get back to me. (A little humor to hopefully brighten your day just a bit.)

But seriously though, I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. Kind of puts all this football talk in perspective. My thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

I'm so sorry, SmoothieX. I lost my Dad on September 19 (which was the day the Bears beat the Cowboys), and I've been in a perpetual funk since then.

Condolances Timby. You too will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Agreed, especially this year. I was listening to a sports talk show the day the Giants won the world series, (This was before the game) and there was an emailer who wrote in saying that this was overrated and sports is just a business. It was a crazy email that got bashed about for a good few days.

Well, that night when the Giants won, the euphoria in this city was something I've never seen before. Granted, there were a few hotspots where people got out of control, but overall it was a united city and nothing else mattered. Whether you were black, white, gay, straight, republican, democrat, everyone around the region had one thing in common, being a fan of the San Francisco Giants.

To bring this towards your point, that win went beyond sports. It was this city's first baseball championship and it changed lives. I think the only thing I can think of that compared was when the Red Sox won in 2004, starting with that historic come from behind win against the Yankees.

Life can suck sometimes, and get your when your down, and overall be really really cruel, but if there is one moment of distraction that leads to good, embrace it because it may never come again. If it's only for a couple hours, it's still worth it.

Sorry, SmoothieX...

In more joyous news, Brett Favre is listed as inactive for tonight's game, so the BS surrounding him is over for the moment. :)

I don't find it all that "joyous" that Favre had to sit out tonight's game. I'm not a fan, but that streak of starts in the NFL is a manly thing. As reluctant as I am to say this, I doubt it will ever come close to being broken

Which would you guys say is more significant and/or impressive, Favre's 297 consecutive starts (321 including playoffs), or Cal Ripken's 2,632 consecutive starts? Football is a much more punishing sport than baseball, particularly for a quarterback, but baseball has a much longer season, and they play multiple games every week as opposed to just once a week.

Interesting stat: Brett Favre has the most consecutive starts in NFL, history, but even he doesn't come close to the record for most consecutive games played in the NFL. That record belongs to punter Jeff Feagles, who played in 352 consecutive games (363 including playoffs). :techman:

^ I'd say the football record is more impressive. Nobody's tackling the crap out of a shortstop. Ripken is still an iron man though, no question.

As far as a punter, most of the time he comes in, kicks the ball and that's it. Once in a blue moon, he ends up tackling the returner. So that's not nearly as impressive.

Apparently the best player capable of taking down Adrian Peterson is... Tarvaris Jackson.
Had to laugh at that one. It was kind of a signal that things were not going to go the Vikings way in the game. Figures that one of the few times I root for the Vikings (a win by them would have helped the Packer's playoff chances) they lay an egg.

Considering how badly Jackson got tossed around in the game, it's a good thing Favre's streak did finally come to an end- he would have gotten mauled out there. An impressive streak, but I'm glad it's finally over. It was becoming too much of a distraction.

With the Vikings eliminated from playoff contention, there's a good chance Favre could sit the rest of the season. I'm sure this isn't how he imagined ending his career (I'm assuming he'll retire for real now).

I know there's nothing whatsoever that I can say to make things better for you. You're in my thoughts, though. It's a rough experience, but you'll get through it. If you need to rap about it, don't hesitate to shoot me a PM.

I was kinda hoping your one of your patented Bears rants so I could relish in the fact that the Pats did it to them.

I watched the game with my wife (who is a huge fan of both the Pats and my Dad). We usually hoot and holler whenever they score a touchdown, throw our arms up, yell at penalties, etc. Enough to the point were the dogs run away because they freak out.

But this one was kinda like, "Oh boy, 36-0, whatever." Just felt empty and like nothing mattered worth a shit.

Not in the funk yet, still just taking care of stuff for my Mom, but once things calm down I'm sure I'll have to come to grips with it.

I'm sorry about your Dad too. Hope he didn't suffer much and went comfortably.

Looks like the Vikings will play their last home game at the Gopher's TCF stadium. They have no idea which of their 3 injured QBs will start, but at least they're not homeless. Hope they can get an exemption from the no alcohol rule at TCF- I have a feeling the fans are going to need it.

Especially if this ends up as their final game in Minnesota before Zygi Wilf brings in the U-Hauls with California license plates.
