NFL Talk - 2010-11 Season

Well it's just that I'm recalling the refs stopping play in the 97 playoff game in order to wipe off an illegal substance (some type of lubricant I think) off the Bronco's defensive lineman's jerseys. Not exactly "the "embodiment of all that is good and true in the world" wouldn't you say?

:p
Well it is obvious that one of the players from the Raiders must have put that on the poor innocent Broncos players because they would never do anything of the kind. :mallory:

I take it you live up in the mountains near Denver, you know at high altitude, low oxygen and all that?

Favre failed the concussion "test" and they're still talking about how they want him to play in the last game.

Leslie Frazier is an idiot. Even before the concussion, Favre was sucking pretty bad and Webb looked surprisingly good. Plus you could use the last game to see a little more of Webb and not worry about the broken down old man who should've stayed gone after the first retirement.

I'm not sure I'd blame Frazier--he seems to be Favre and Wilf's puppet. My money's on Favre calling the shots here since he clearly doesn't realize playing in his current condition isn't helping himself or his team--the guy's shown he doesn't know when to quit. The only reason he's not in there playing with a concussion is due to the NFL's rules, not his own choice.

They'll just play at Minnesota's stadium and put a new roof on the Metrodome or just open it up. The Vikings aren't going to go to LA just because Magic Johnson said he wants a team.

They can't open up the Metrodome. It's not built for that. It would be impossible to use it with no roof. Either they fix it (which will take months, well into next year) or tear it down.

Even if none of this had ever happened, the Vikings would still be planning a move. They don't want to play in the Metrodome anymore anyway, never mind the roof business. Even if the Metrodome were completely repaired right now, they'd still want out. Partly because the Metrodome is obsolete, but mostly because of the Vikings having a lease that, to be blunt, sucks.

Mark my words, if the Vikings don't get a new stadium, they WILL move. Where they will move TO is up in the air, but they will move.

The question is does Minnesota have the money? It's going to cost somewhere in the neighborhood $700 million to $1 billion dollars to build a retractable roof stadium, that will hold 70,000+. This will be what the NFL/Vikings (especially if Minnesota wants to host another Super Bowl) will demand going forward plus a lease that sends most money from events, parking and concessions held in the stadium to the Vikings. I don't see Zygi Wilf funding this thing privately with people in Los Angeles wanting to build a stadium that would require no investment from whatever NFL franchise decides to move there.

I'm not sure I see it getting done.

Another option may be to work with the University of Minnesota to expand TCF Bank stadium to 65,000-70,000 seats. But I'm sure that the university would want the money from events, concessions and parking as part of any deal to host the Vikings long-term. Plus, it would end Minnesota's days of hosting Super Bowl's.

Heading into the week 17 regular season, I'm finally up by a game in my weekly pool with my wife after being behind all season (all last season too). Winner for the season gets a Pats sweatshirt of their choice. Hopefully I can bring the blitz this week to avoid losing for yet another year...we pick 5-6 games a week straight up, so it's still anyone's game.

Also, it's time for the old everything is wrapped up start 'em or sit 'em debate. I believe the Pats are still the only team that knows its seeding for sure, though correct me if I'm wrong. They typically are not one to sit/pull the starters, but after the Welker injury in a meaningless week 17 game last year, it's hard to say.

Say the Pats call off the dogs and Miami wins...it would make them 7-1 on the road, and 1-7 at home, that's just weird.

The Eagles are locked into the No. 3 seed in the NFC. Kolb is starting for Vick and I don't imagine Jackson or McCoy see much playing time.

should they have play the game on sunday dec 26 night bettween the Eagles vs minn! Or move it to tuesday like they did and is it more fun to play in the show? love dr!

If the issue was just the playing conditions, then I would say that they should have left it. However, their big worry was that if the storm got as bad as they were predicting, then fans ran the risk of being stranded at the stadium. On those grounds, I agree with the call. The storm obviously wasn't as bad as expected, but I agree with the decision not to take that chance.

Right.

As I said a while back, it's kind of hard for a coach to assert authority over a quarterback when said quarterback came back to play only after home visits from the coach's envoys (and the coach himself), and after the owner forked out an extra $5 million, and after the coach personally picked up the quarterback from the airport to bring him to the team facility. Granted, that was Childress, not Frazier, but it's eminently clear that Favre has the Vikings organization by the balls.

They won't leave. Despite the stadium issues, I don't see moving a successful franchise in the 14th largest market to an unproven (or previously unsuccessful) city. They've threatened to move so many times that very few even take the threat seriously any more. Sooner or later they'll work out a deal for a new stadium. It may not be as soon as Wilf wants, but unless he's willing to foot more of the bill, he's gotta suck it up and make do with what he has.

On a completely unrelated note, congrats to Adm. Bonz for winning the TrekBBs fantasy league!

Partly because the Metrodome is obsolete, but mostly because of the Vikings having a lease that, to be blunt, sucks.

You are aware that the Vikings pay no rent for their usage of the Metrodome, yes?

Yeah, the Metrodome huffs dong, but I've said it before and I'll say it again, if they want a new stadium so goddamn bad, they can pay for it themselves, instead of telling Minneapolis, "Build us a new stadium, or we'll leave." (And, yes, I'm aware that two groups are trying to get the team to relocate to Los Angeles.) I'm so fucking tired of this trend, first populated by Bud Selig, of teams trying to hold their host cities hostage by threatening to move elsewhere unless a stadium is built with public funds. Jerry Jones' monstrosity in Texas is the most egregious offender; after the construction costs nearly doubled, Jones rammed a bunch of sales tax increases and bond sales through Arlington to cover his liability. What were the Cowboys going to do, leave Texas after the stadium was already halfway-built? :guffaw:

Do you have a link for that? The sales tax increase and bond sales were passed before construction began and were limited to about $325 million, with Jerry Jones on the hook for the rest, about $875 million after costs escalated.

Jerry was trying for refinancing/ additional funding in late '08 following the crash.
