NFL Talk - 2010-11 Season

Hell, when 9-7 Arizona was a couple plays away from winning the Super Bowl, at least two (maybe three) other 9-7 teams were sitting at home watching. The difference? They didn't win their division.

So the only thing differentiating the multiple 9-7 teams were artificially created division lines. Instead of settling it on the field. In 2008, Tampa Bay was actually 8-4 (finishing 9-7) in the NFC compared to the Cardinals 7-5 (finishing 9-7). When determining the wildcard teams the second tie-breaker is Conference record (first being head-to-head which didn't happen).

So the Buccaneers were screwed twice in a three year period by the NFC West. Seems these things happen more often than we give credit for.

In the end, I'm not for or against anyone's team... I'm a Dolphins fan. But come playoff time I want to see the best teams the NFL has to offer.

EDIT: Wow. I didn't realize the same year an 11-5 New England Patriots team sat out of the playoffs so the AFC West division winner, the 8-8 San Diego Chargers, could have a spot at the dance.

I'm not a Buccaneers fan... but they proved both in record and on the field vs. both potential NFC West representatives that they were the better team.

A way to fairly resolve the scenario really needs to be built into playoff scenarios going forward. Not every conference winner (in college) qualifies for a BCS bowl bid.

You need to pick the six best teams from each conference... regardless of division. Even under the 'best six' scenario, the Rams or Seahawks would still get to raise a banner as NFC West champs, they just wouldn't receive the automatic playoff berth. Under the current scenario the Rams or Seahawks will pick behind the Buccaneers come the April draft.

I've never understood the whole "let's give them a playoff spot because they won a division" idea that is in every major sport.

If a team has a better record, they should go the playoffs. Pure and simple.

Then why have divisions at all?

To be honest, I'd be okay with no divisions.

Like some have said, divisions are an attempt to make rivalries happen. It's also another stat for commentators to bring out to prove a point that one team or the other is going to win.

Winning a division and still having a losing record is no accomplishment.

Urgh. Don't remind me. :ack:

I'm all for sending the top twelve teams in the league to the playoffs. Winning your division doesn't mean squat if your division sucks.

Ahhhhh, did Mikey fumble twice tonight? What a pity I had to work late.

So much for Obama's praise. There aren't words to properly express my disappointment with the president and his ridiculous pandering to the "Vick can no wrong" constituency. I thought he was better than that. I thought he had more political savvy for sure. Plenty of good people in this country who are out of work who need the chance to work. Never thought I'd say this, but shut up Mr. President. Guess there's a first time for everything. Very poor judgment on the president's part.

Apparently Mikey can do a great deal wrong when those powerhouse Vikings with mr. no name at quarterback come to town.

EDIT--With his poor performance tonight, Vick pretty much gave the MVP award to Tom Brady gift wrapped with a pretty bow. Nice. If Dallas and the Giants hadn't literally given their games away at the end to the Eagles, the mighty birds would only be 8-7 going into the playoffs. They're good, but they aren't that good.

All the president said was that it was great Vick got another chance. The idea he feels Vick can do no wrong is ridiculous.

No, he didn't say Vick could do no wrong. But there are plenty of people who don't think it's so wonderful Vick got a chance to live his dream while so many struggle. There are people out there more deserving of positive attention. Obama's call was an error in judgment.

There are people all over the world who do many things who are more deserving than football players, but the simple truth is they aren't going to get that attention. I'm willing to bet Pete Rouse is more deserving of attention than Michael Vick just to name one Obama could have named. But we don't have a Chief of Staff forum at this board and there's a reason. People care about NFL players.

So the question becomes is he working hard as an NFL player? Is his proportion of attention reasonable compared to other NFL players based on his accomplishments this season compared to his place last season and the relative success of his team? Nobody is praising Michael Vick because he went to prison. If they were, he would have been a novelty and they would have moved on. They gave him praise because he's been playing well this season.

Tonight, he didn't. The entire Philadelphia Eagles have been focusing on the Cowboys if not the playoffs. They played as if they were asleep tonight and he was no exception.

Valid points, I concede. People are invested in NFL players. Too much, IMO. Also, "as if they were asleep" is a kind term for how poorly Vick played. From what I'm reading, Philly was exposed as pretty one dimensional tonight. Rather ironic that Vick went belly up the day after we hear of the presidential call.

Also, WTF is with the BCS analogy? That's not a playoff.

Just showing that not every "winner" of a conference/division gets a chance at the big prize.

Okay, the big prize in college football is the national championship. How many of the BCS bowl teams are playing for the national championship?

And NCAA Division I football isn't exact the best example to use for fairness if you apply their model to any other sport:

"Sorry, Packers, even though you went 14-2, so did the Colts and Falcons, and since they were ranked ahead of you during the preseason poll all those months ago they're the ones who get to go to the Super Bowl."

I've never understood the whole "let's give them a playoff spot because they won a division" idea that is in every major sport.

MLS doesn't do that. I think this year half the teams in the East playoff bracket were actually from the West.
The Cowboys are an Eastern Division team for some strange reason.

The Cowboys are in the NFC East because so that they can stay with their biggest longtime rivals.

If that were true I'd have taken the first opportunity to rant about Obama last night. I decided to let it go. Then this gift of a game happened, so a girl's gotta have fun. ;)

How likely does everyone think Vikings' interim head coach Leslie Frazier will be able to remove that "interim" tag for next season?

Don't know...

If Zygi Wilf brings in Bill Parcells as his football 'czar', you might be in line to get Tony Sparano/Jeff Ireland for cheap!

I'd say pretty unlikely. I think Frazier's done a good job and deserves a chance, but Wilf is an idiot. And he probably thinks he needs to bring in a big name coach to spur support for a new stadium.

Well, you did take the time to totally misrepresent what he said and then tell him to "Shut Up, Mr. President".

Just sayin.

I wouldn't count on Frazier getting the "interim" tag removed since the Vikings are pushing for a new stadium and likely to bring in a big name coach.

I'm also curious to see if Jason Garrett gets the Dallas coaching job. I'd be shocked if he didn't but then I'm not Jerry Jones.
