NFL free agency 2009

Deal seems odd on the face of it, but Billichick is much better than this than me, and has knowledge of the other parts on the board, so we'll see.
Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me a bit to find out that this was the opening move of some kind of plan.

Of greater interest to me right now is the storm brewing in Denver over the Broncos' attempts to trade Cutler, no to mention Jay's being rather ticked off about it.

It kind of makes sense - new head coach wants to get "his" guys in who he knows can run his system.

Cassel seemed like an obvious choice.

And I'm sure there are very few names who aren't at least mentioned this time of year.

Always fun in Bronco-town.

They did sign Dawkins from Philly and Andre Goodman, they can't be anything other than upgrades on the defense.

What gets me the most is not being able to get my news from the recently departed Rocky Mountain News. The Denver Post sucks the sweat off a dead man's balls.

Brandon Marshall's latest escapades don't help matters much. But those signings are very good news.

What are your feelings personally on the Cutler situation? I know that's life in the NFL, but ... I have to say I'd not feel terribly happy mysefl were I in the same situation.

I think Cutler needs a little humility. Maybe some can be snuck into his insulin.

I think he's got great upside but needs to know when to shut his mouth (most of the time).

I don't think trading him is the answer and hope they don't. I also think he and McDaniel should go play racketball together for a couple of hours and realize they're both intense people who want to win and put this crap behind them.

Maybe paint the racquetballs themselves with pictures of Philip Rivers? Al Davis?

I agree with that. Most people have the good sense to keep their mouths shut when a new management team is put in place.

Maybe they have a big signing in mind, and just gave them Vrabel for free to clear a position or cap space? Who knows?

There are rumours they're looking to get Peppers, using some of their draft picks in a potential trade, as the hooded man has always spoken highly of him, but I'm not sure that's happening. Converting a 4-3 DE to a 3-4 OL is a risky venture...

Anyways, this was a nice tribute to Cassel:

I'm going to miss the guy, as he brought a new dynamic to the team, a QB that can actually move. :)

For his sake, I hope he ends up in Chicago or Philly (if McNabb walks). Someplace with a little talent around him.

You mean some place like Kansas City? Well I guess they've got Tony G and that's more than a "little talent."

The word from CNN-SI at the moment is that the Pats only got the Chief's second round pick this year (and nothing else) for Cassel and Vrabel.

As a Chiefs fan who's been suffering under former regime of Carl Peterson for about the last 20 years, do you know how bizarre it feels to see this deal and go WTF?, but the WTF is about how good the deal appears to be as opposed to how bad it normally is?

Hell some sports writers are demanding an investigation into the matter because it seems so lopsided.

I haven't seen much talk about Brian Dawkins in this thread. I know he's a step behind he once was, but he's still one of the better free safeties in the league.

The real WTF moment you're going to get is when Pioli announces the team is renamed the Kansas City Minutemen.

I've seen some articles akin to that, and I really think it's rather silly of them. Just what is it that needs to be investigated? What could have happened that would warrant such a step?

Well apparently it's come out that there were some other teams who were willing to offer more than the Chiefs for Cassel. Like for example, apparently Detroit offered the #33 pick which is one pick ahead of the Chiefs. There were others as well.

The thing we don't know is about the timing and whether those offers were actually on the table at the time the Chiefs made the deal. I have to admit it does seem kind of odd that the Patriots would have accepted less in compensation to send him to the team that, oh by the way, now happens to be run by one of "their" guys.

So Kurt Warner met with Satan, er...I mean the 49ers?

NO!

That is unaccpetable.

:scream:

Timing is a big part of this. Maybe they felt that there was a chance that they could get more if they waited, but there was also a chance that they got stuck with him, and the 14.6 mil cap hit would have killed them. I could see Pioli putting a time limit on the offer to force that situation. The details of the Tampa Bay/Denver deal seem to have been later debunked, so when looking at this from the Detroit vs KC offers, it makes sense.

Yes, it's one pick worse than the Detroit offer, but they also gained 4.2 million in cap space by adding Vrabel to the deal. If they wanted to clear space (and Vrabel was #5 or #6 on the biggest cap hits for the Pats this year), he was the first guy on that list they could live without, and felt he was towards the end. If moving back one spot bought them more flexibility, and allowed them to "do right" by Vrabel by trading him rather than releasing him, it makes perfect sense.

Unfortunate that the trade market doesn't seem to have developed like expected (bad economy, teams not taking chances, etc), but getting the #34 pick for someone they wanted to cut in August is a pretty good take, in the end. Still would have been happier with a mid-teens pick, but the Pats took what they could get, i guess.

How are the Pats set up for draft picks over the next couple of seasons?

In the upcoming draft, they currently have their #1 pick (23rd, i think?), and 3 2nd rounders. Should be an extra 3rd rounder or so in there somewhere as a comp pick for the Samuel loss, I think.

Not aware of any extra picks held in 2010 at this point, so assume just the standard spread. Pretty likely that they'll turn some of those 2nd and 3rd rounders into either an upgrade this year, or trade them for better picks next year. the #34 pick, for example, could be a prime candidate to snag a #1 pick next year, if they don't like what they see on the board at that point. Having 3 picks in the 2nd round gives them a TON of flexibility.
