NFL free agency 2009

just seems like Cassel in SanFran for their #10 pick is a good fit, for good value, and puts Cassel back in his home town, to boot. the 49ers have the makings of a decent team, if cassel plays anything like he did here...

Yeah, Scout, I'm with you on being surprised they moved Vrabel. He's only a season removed from a 12 sack year and was one of their valued veterans. PLUS he only saved 3.3 million against the cap.

on the other hand, was on the last year of his deal, clears some cap space, and was slowing down. The Pats have shown they'll make that tough, almost heartless choice when dumping veterans. Can't judge it until we see what they got in return, though. It's gotta be part of something else, though. Either a plan for another LB (peppers?), or maybe part of a package with Cassel for KC's big pick? Or maybe they just are planning to keep cassel, and need to free up cap space...

A couple of mock drafts I've read say the Niners will take Sanchez out of USC with that pick.

Sanchez is still considered a "project", albeit perhaps less of one than most. I wouldn't want to see him thrown out there for a couple of years, since he's coming out a year early. Who do they have right now as their starter?

Hill? Smith? O'Sullivan?

Who knows?

I can't imagine the fans in SF would tolerate Michael Vick.

They have to do something.

Scout,

What you're saying about the Niners going after Cassel for the 10th pick makes sense, but I really don't want to see the Niners deal with the Patriots again in the future, given what happened a few years ago. Granted, Staley is a pretty good defensemen, but that whole thing made me feel queasy. Also, I still don't understand why Hill doesn't have the job. I mean why not give him a chance. He's proven himself numorous times, and deserves the chance.

Not sure I understand this one. I mean, the guy you picked didn't really work out for you, but the Patriots didn't have anything to do with it, other than being the place you traded with to get the pick. Get queasy over the guy you've got drafting players, not another ogranization. Or maybe your own team? That pick shouldn't have been worth as much as it was, the 49ers just tanked that year and fell way short of projections, so what should have been a late teens/early 20s pick turned into #7. Still, not the Patriots' fault ;) Anywho, doesn't matter anymore, because...

Cassel is reported to have been traded to the Chiefs. No word on compensation yet, and they still haven't said what Vrabel was worth, or if he was part of this package. Called that one :)

We'll see what the return ends up being, but with giving them these two players, would be suprised if it wasn't their #3 pick, or maybe they got creative with something like their 2nd rounder this year, and a 1st rounder next year? Still waiting on the details, but nice to see that the Cassel trade happened, for 2 reasons:

-back to having plenty of cap space for signing players, or resigning our own players that have expiring contracts, like Wilfork and Seymour.

-Means they're fairly confident in Brady coming back ok

The word from CNN-SI at the moment is that the Pats only got the Chief's second round pick this year (and nothing else) for Cassel and Vrabel.

seems like there's something still missing there, so will wait until they announce it for real. seems like it's all just off of a peter King report at the moment. Atlanta gave 2 2nd rounders for Schaub recently, a single 2nd rounder for a better QB and another player seems light...

Could be something missing. I agree that it's a ridiculously low price to pay for Cassel and Vrabel.

I'd be suprised if there's not something else in it. A conditional pick was mentioned earlier, i wonder if it could be in the form of a conditional 2nd round pick in 2010, that could turn into a 1st if Cassel performs at a certain level?

THAT would make the deal make more sense...

Damn, I'm gonna miss Cassel. It was fun to watch him grow up last year. I hope he does well in KC.

The Texans signed Antonio Smith from Arizona. Now we got him on one side, and Mario Williams on the other. I'm liking the off season so far.

edit: It's being reported the Texans signed Dan Orlovsky to replace Sage at backup QB.

It would make more sense, but I haven't seen any changes to the announcement in the past 24 hours, which leads me more and more to believe that all the Pats got was a number two in this year's draft. You got to wonder what was up with that.

Let's put things into perspective.
Many a Pats fan was more than a bit displeased with the notion of the Patriots keeping Cassel over Gutierrez before the start of the regular '08 season.
And now we just managed to get a second round draft pick for a player originally selected in the seventh round.

I would say, all in all, things turned out rather well.

Apparently, there are some cries of suspicion here, given that the Chiefs' new GM is Scott Pioli.... and that earlier reports had New England wanting a couple of high draft picks for Cassel. I have no idea what the rules are regarding compensation and all, but I'm less sure about the "salary cap" reasoning now.

Of greater interest to me right now is the storm brewing in Denver over the Broncos' attempts to trade Cutler, no to mention Jay's being rather ticked off about it.

Granted, better to have gotten a nice high 2nd rounder when the cries in August were to dump Cassel, but just seemed like there was more value there. Hell, I could probably even live with it if it was just Cassel for the 34th pick. It's the idea that they had to "throw in" Vrabel to even get the compensation to that level that is kinda absurd. Even if it was a 2nd and a 4th, or something along those lines, it might make more sense. Maybe there's a "make-up" trade with another veteran coming still? I'm just not sure what to make of it, until the dust settles and I see what Bellichick had in mind (draft picks, cap space, FA signings, etc). Too many moving parts to say.

Maybe they have a big signing in mind, and just gave them Vrabel for free to clear a position or cap space? Who knows?

At the very least, it should clear the room needed to sign Wilfork to an extension, and take care of another couple expiring contracts. Still think the $$$ is too much for a Peppers deal, but trading Vrabel for just cap space could make sense in that light. Or maybe they just have a draft target they love, or plan on turning some of their 2nd rounders (they have 3 this year) into another 1st round pick?

Deal seems odd on the face of it, but Billichick is much better than this than me, and has knowledge of the other parts on the board, so we'll see.

Considering his success on the field, I'd tend to give Belichick the benefit of the doubt.

Then again, maybe the suspicions surrounding this seeming lack of adequate trade value, are more fallout from the Spygate scandal than anything else.
