NFL Football - 2008-09 Season Discussion

In Arizona or on neutral ground, the Cards are now a far better team than the Eagles. That much is obvious. Under the circumstances, though, in the Philly cold night air, on three days' rest having traveled across country, I think McNabb and company shellack them.

Not to mention Philly didn't exactly have a long trip home (at least milewise) this week, they played in Baltimore.

I too think Philly will win. The trend of dome/warm weather teams playing poorly in cold weather plus what seems to be a new trend this year of west coast teams playing badly on the east coast both tend to hold.

I don't get the latter one. I always found it easier to travel east than west.

You "lose time" going east, so your body has a harder time adjusting on such a quick basis.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that of all the teams that have gone form the west coast to play on the east coast this season, none has won yet this season.

Yes, I watched the whole thing.

And you don't think the Cards played well? We evidently didn't watch the same game.

Are we counting moral victories in the standings now?

;)

No, but they certainly count in our hearts. :techman:

23 yards rushing is not going to cut it against anybody. Warner put up some good numbers, but once again he turned the ball over giving points to NY.

Warner's a package deal: You get the surgeon's touch, along with the Dave Krieg-like inability to hold the ball.

As to the Cards' ground game ... have you ever seen a team with slower-developing runs? Geez, Louise, you and I could hop a plane, meet in Phoenix, ride together in a taxi to the stadium, and gang-tackle Hightower before he gets out of the backfield!

Yeah, I think they'll host a wildcard team and beat them. After that, it'll be tough sledding.

Yeah. They can win in Atlanta, Tampa, Dallas ... maybe even Carolina.

But New York, Chicago, Green Bay, Philly, Washington? Uh uh.

You're quite right, Neroon.

My only hope is that the Eagles decide to mail it in ... but it doesn't seem in their personality to just give up.

Anybody see the Saints-Packers game/rout? I was expecting a closer final score. Geaux Saints even though I'm a Giants fan.

Yes, I watched a fair amount of it, and right now... I'd put Brees in the Pro Bowl as the #1 or #2 QB. He was outright having fun last night.

I assume your other NFC Pro Bowl quarterback at this point is Warner?

Pfffft... who else? One possible knock is that he has the best receiving corps in the league, but I tend to not hold that against him. Plus, he has thrown for an excellent amount of yardage against some good defenses. Some lousy ones, too, but about half are what I'd have to say top notch defenses - Giants, Bears, Cowboys for example.

Well, they played pretty well. Special teams and the running game were not up to snuff. And I agree those delayed draw-type runs are too slow to develop. No one is fooled by them.

If Arizona wants to get to the top tier in the NFL they have to win games like that. At home, when your opponent is minus their starting running back and a starting receiver, you should win. "Holding your own" doesn't count.

I always think of that great Sean Connery line: Losers always whine about their "best". Winners go home and fuck the prom queen.

:techman:

Special teams seemed to be the Cardinals undoing, for the most part. Hixon had those two long returns, which the Giants took advantage of quickly. While the Cards' running game only netted 23 yds, the Giants' only got 80+ yds themselves. Jacobs being out was the primary factor there

Man, I would so love to have seen Falcons-Panthers. I haven't had the chance to watch Matt Ryan yet. It's utterly insane that a rookie quarterback should be playing this well. 60% completion rate, and only 6 INT's all season so far.

I got to see Ryan play live in Tampa Bay. It wasn't really his best game, but I saw some confidence in him. It just happened to be that he was still only a few games into the season and he was facing a tough defense.

Well, they played pretty well.

We'll agree to disagree.

If Arizona wants to get to the top tier in the NFL they have to win games like that.

And next year, they will.

At home, when your opponent is minus their starting running back and a starting receiver, you should win.

Not against the Super Bowl champions.

"Holding your own" doesn't count.

Yes, it does—especially when the old Cardinals would have folded their tents after having gone down 24-12 ... or even 10-9.

The Cardinals are winners—seven games, thus far, along with the NFC West. So I'm sure they're bangin' away even as we speak. :techman:

Reaction to Vick's plea bargain yesterday on state charges.

So, do we know yet which wide receiver the Lions plan to take with the No. 1 overall pick?

I'm thinking they'll have to take their proverbial WR with the #2 pick. The Lions play their last game against the Packers, and as much as I love the Packers, if there's a playoff berth on the line, the Pack will screw it up. And if there isn't, the Lions will screw up and win the game anyway.

I don't think that includes east coast teams that have played out west, then returned east and won , because the Jets, Panthers, Patriots, and Falcons have all done exactly that.

West coast teams are an overall 12-32 this year, so jet lag may not be the main culprit for that stat.

I still contend that it has a large influence. An east coast team travelling west and then back I would think would experience less of an effect, because they're more used to the rhythm of life in the eastern timezone. The net effect would tend to be less. A west coast team travelling east is more used to timeframe in the west, so the net effect would tend to be greater.
