NFL 2023: A different shade of green for Aaron Rodgers

End of an era. Probably needed to happen, but still sad it ended like this. Also with all of the reported interest, it’s a bit annoying that they’re not trying to get compensation for a trade rather than just releasing him

Yes, it's classier and all that, and not suggesting that they send him to the Jets against his will, just saying that with all of the rumors of people lining up to sign him, seems like they could have collected a few offers and let him pick his destination while the Pats still got something for him.

That said, would have rather kept him and just fired the GM half of him, letting him coach and installing new GM and whole new offensive coaching tree, but maybe there was no way to get a clean enough break to fix some of the things that went wrong in there without taking Bill out too.

See what happens with the Vrabel vs Mayo rumors, or if they go in a totally new direction and really clean house, going after someone like Johnson from the Lions or something (the new shiny object)...

I like Vrabel, but I wouldn’t want to be the guy replacing Belichick in New England.

I really like Vrabel but to be honest Mayo would be a great pick to head the team. Defense was the only part of the Patriots worth a damn lately, and he won't try to be the GM too.

If I'm Mayo and the Pats don't have a QB, I'm not sure I want the job, honestly.

Pete Carroll back to New England and bringing Russell Wilson with him. :p

I tend to think Vrabel ends up in New England, with Dan Quinn being the guy for the Seahawks. Belichick probably ends up with the Commanders. I think ego's are way too big in LA ownership for him or Jim Harbaugh to end up with the Chargers, even though that is probably the perfect landing spot for him.

Atlanta? I have no clue. Antonio Pierce?
Las Vegas? I'd roll with Pierce, but this is probably where Harbaugh ends up.
Tennessee? Bobby Slowik, OC from Houston.
Los Angeles Chargers? Kellen Moore?
Carolina? The leftovers no one else wants.

Prediction: If Miami loses to the Chiefs, I expect Stephen Ross to flirt with Belichick/Carroll, completely undercutting Mike McDaniel if he ends up being retained.

Harbaugh probably wants total control. Chargers have a franchise QB but ownership is a mess. Seattle had Carroll in charge and the GM as the No. 2 for 14 seasons. Now the GM finally gets to be No. 1 and won't want a head coach who wants his power too.

If you want a legacy that's about building a team from the ground up, Washington is the place to go. New ownership just cleaned house and you have the No. 2 pick to take a QB.

Chargers are probably the ultimate coaching tease. A roster that should be able to compete now, with an ownership group/front office you wouldn't want running a port-a-john.

Belichick needs to go to a win-now type team; the man is nearly 72 and probably won't want to go somewhere where a rebuild is in order. Atlanta is a possibility, but they need a QB. If we've learned anything in recent years, it's that even the great Belichick can't win without a decent QB. Chargers? I'm not sure ownership will put up the salary that BB would command. And a lot depends on whether BB would be content simply coaching or if he'd want GM power similar to his position in New England.

I can’t see him going somewhere where he doesn’t have control over the final roster.

Now I have to decide if my 2+ decades of of anti-Patriot-ism is stronger than how I've always liked Jerod Mayo....

Obviously it's tough to see the greatest coach in your team's history (and one who coached them for more than half of my life) move on, but time stops for no one, and while it's sad that it had to end on a down note, it's really hard to be successful in the modern NFL without a strong quarterback. And, while his coaching abilities were never in question, I think it's become pretty clear that his GM abilities aren't as sharp--at least when it comes to the offensive side of the ball. I'll always be grateful for what Belichick did for the Patriots but this is probably the right time to move on.

I'm excited about Jerod Mayo. By all indications he's a great locker room presence and the players love him, and I think that's a really important part about being a head coach in today's NFL that maybe wasn't as important in the past. I just hope the Patriots nail their GM and coordinator hires...

I hope Mayo does well, but he has the same problem Belichick had for the last three years… no Quarterback.
