I really don't understand mid-season firings at all.

The only genuinely valid reasons to fire a coach mid-season is if it's become clear that they've lost the locker room and are actively harming the team (this was the case with Frank Reich), or if an organization has already identified a candidate and wants to begin doing their due diligence and background checking now, instead of waiting for Black Monday after the regular season
