NFL 2021 season - Belichick Strikes Back

Rodgers explains himself:

Appearing Friday on former NFL player and occasional pro wrestler Pat McAfee’s YouTube show, Rodgers complained that he is “in the crosshairs of the woke mob right now” but claimed he “didn’t lie” about being vaccinated and didn’t mislead anyone with his unusual “immunized” comment.

“It wasn’t some sort of ruse or lie, it was the truth. Had there been a follow up to my statement that I’ve been immunized, I would have responded with this. I would’ve said, ‘Look, I’m not some sort of anti-vax flat-earther, I am somebody who is a critical thinker, you guys know me, I march to the beat of my own drum, I believe strongly in bodily autonomy.’”

Rodgers, who will make $33.5 million this year with the Packers, went on to claim he has an allergy in an ingredient in two of the COVID vaccines so he decided to forgo the three CDC-approved vaccines in favor of a pseudoscientific homeopathic remedy he believes “raise[d] his antibody levels.” He said the NFL was always aware he was unvaccinated.

In a lengthy rant about vaccines, COVID research and NFL protocols, Rogers spouted reams of misinformation about the vaccines’ impact on sterility and on the effectiveness of face masks.

“You have a moral obligation to object to unjust rules and rules that make no sense,” Rogers said, in the process misquoting MLK, who wrote in a 1963 letter from the Birmingham, Alabama jail, “One has not only a legal, but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.”

There is no “law” requiring NFL players to get vaccinated, nor is there a league-wide vaccine mandate. There are, however, COVID protocols that all unvaccinated players must follow. The league is now investigating whether Rodgers has violated those guidelines, which include wearing masks at all times while in team facilities.

“What about ‘My body, my choice?’” Rodgers said during his bizarre appearance on McAfee’s broadcast. “What about making the best decision for my circumstance? This idea that it’s the pandemic of the unvaccinated, it’s just a total lie.”

This, of course, is not a lie: The unvaccinated are 29 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID than the vaccinated, according to a recent CDC study.

“If the vaccine is so great, then how come people are still getting COVID and spreading COVID?” Rodgers went on, again significantly misstating the facts. While low levels of the virus have been found in vaccinated people with so-called breakthrough infections, those who have received their shots are far less likely to be contagious and transmit COVID to others.

I wonder who will take him on?

Have to be someone with a strong coach and locker room. I'd think the Saints would have to be frontrunners now that Michael Thomas is done for the year. Though OBJ still has to clear waivers and that won't be final until Monday at 4pm.

QAnon Rodgers is simply asking for fines - but he can always sell the Bears to pay for them.

If Rodgers had just left it at being concerned about getting the mRNA vaccine because of an allergy to some of the ingredients (which I highly dubious he even has given its rareness and "doing his own research" like you can just self-diagnose allergy to a vaccine ingredient on Wikipedia), that would have at least been somewhat understandable and sympathetic, if still wrong, considering it's not just his life and his career he's putting at risk over an incredibly small hypothetical.

Although I would hope the team doctors or his personal physicians would sit him down and talk about risk assessment considering only 2-5 people per million vaccinated individuals have experienced life threatening Anaphylaxis from all of the COVID vaccines, which is completely within normal ranges for vaccines like this) . Even an extremely healthy on the cusp of middle-age athlete like himself, while in one of the lesser risk groups for serious complications, faces a far greater danger from COVID then from allergies to the vaccine, and it doesn't even have to be a fatal risk; he could experience career ending breathing problems and other debilitating symptoms.

His next excuse is that he can't take the non-mRNA Johnson & Johnson vaccine because of an (extremely small) risk of blood clots. You know what carries a much higher risk of blood clots? COVID.

Then he starts in about "bodily autonomy", which is rich considering he's like a Super Christian (which is not the problem, before anyone gets up at arms) who almost certainly does not extend that same courtesy of bodily autonomy to women's reproductive rights. I could be wrong and he's an outlier who's pro-choice, but I'm not liking the over-under on that bet.

I think he cited "Draconian measures" and "shaming" because the NFL and the team insisted on COVID testing before each practice and game to prevent him from getting his teammates or others sick. Yeah, if you make a choice to put your fellow players at risk, you're going to have to suffer a few minor inconveniences to mitigate that risk. There's nothing Draconian or shaming about it, and the only person who imposed it on you was you. The NFL is just following CDC guidelines and protecting their business, and the health and careers of your fellow players. I thought a former player's union rep like Rodgers would care about that.

And what the fuck does a vaccine have to do with being "woke" or not? The word has lost all meaning, and the pejorative form of it never had much ground to stand on to begin with.

The guy had unfettered access to the best physicians in the world that most people can only dream of, yet who does he turn to for advice? Joe Fucking Rogan. I guess pouring bugs on people on 'Fear Factor' makes him a scientist.

Hopefully the horse dewormer he's taking helps Rodgers bring home a Kentucky Derby ring next year.

He claimed he wore masks when he was in the building and followed all NFLPA protocols, explaining that in press conference rooms, reporters are vaccinated and masked. He said he is tested for COVID-19 every morning.

“I have followed every single protocol to a ‘T’, except that one that makes absolutely no sense to me,” Rodgers said, referring to the press conferences.

“The only time I don’t wear my mask is when I’m around all vaccinated people.”

Oh, so it's cool to take advantage of the fact that other people are actually being responsible and conscientious by getting vaccinated? As long as literally everyone else in the room follows the rules, why should I have to?

And citing MLK to justify his bullshit like he's some kind of righteous hero is just fucking insane. MLK would have had ample reason to be weary of government vaccines due to the Tuskegee Syphilis Study (among others) and its cruel and unethical treatment of black people. Those are actual Draconian measures, not the minor inconvenience of daily testing and wearing a mask.
