NFL 2020 Season: We're gonna bite a kneecap off

Red Tails, Redtails, Redtails, Red Tails...

Do it Washington! If they do it I'll root for them except against the Eagles and Titans. I'll even buy a piece of merchandise just to show my appreciation.

NFL now in on the “review”...

https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/03/us/washington-redskins-name-review-spt/index.html

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement the league is "supportive of this important step."

I guess we know now that “never” is roughly seven or eight years...

In the past, Snyder has refused to change the name, telling USA Today in 2013 that it would "never" happen.

"It's that simple," he said at the time. "NEVER -- you can use caps."

Good for him. Get as much money as you can while you can.

Given that with the way he runs there's a very real possibility of him suffering an Alex Smith-esque freak injury (or just getting concussed to oblivion), absolutely. Every NFL player should get paid before their brains and bodies are held together with chewing gum, toothpicks and the blood of the wretched and the damned.

It's funny to me how this issue cycles around. Been hearing about it since 2002. But, more interesting to me, is that Washington Post poll that showed that a majority of Native Americans didn't find it offensive. Now that has to be walked back in order to clarify it, even though the logo was supposedly designed by a Native American.

At this point if the NFL never returns it will just fine by me.

More like a ultra-majority - around 90% of Native Americans polled didn't give a toss - in the first sentence of the article!

I did not know that - heh... makes it all that much more amusing - or tragic - depending on how you look at it. Oh well... Sign of the sad times in which we live, I guess.

In any case, if they do change the name, I heard "Redtails" is being considered. I think I could get behind that.

I couldn't get the article to load. Thanks for the link! :D

I was always surprised there was not team called the "Hawks" in the NFL-Seahawks doesn't count.

There are always groups who "advocate" for the Native Americans, whether they want them to or not. Those are the PC Police.

What about the Chicago Blackhawks?

So uh... DeSean Jackson is an idiot.

Yeah... though it seems he is admitting his mistake...

https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/08/us/desean-jackson-holocaust-memorial-trnd/index.html

However, Jackson has accepted an invitation from the chairman of the Horwitz-Wasserman Holocaust Memorial Plaza, David Adelman.

Jackson will tour the Philadelphia plaza and attend an education session, Adelman wrote on Twitter, after a FaceTime call with Jackson and Michael Rubin, executive chairman of sports merchandise company Fanatics.

"People make mistakes sometimes," Rubin tweeted. "What (sic) matters is that you learn and grow from it and find away (sic) to turn it into a positive! I know DeSean Jackson - he is NOT anti-Semitic and will now make a difference on these issues."

In his apology post, Jackson said he will "fully educate" himself and work with local and national organizations to "be more informed and make a difference in our community."

He said he did not intend to hurt Jewish Americans with his Instagram posts.

If you admit that you were wrong and are willing to learn from it, I'm all for giving a second chance to folks.

Yeah he definitely deserves a second chance but jesus, how are you gonna (apparently earnestly) tweet things attributed to HItler and think it's not a Bad Idea?

Well, hopefully he really has learned better.

Unfortunately, it seems many people post on social media before they think.

Though I have no idea, as I would never do something like that... :shifty:

Washington to not use any Native American imagery, hopes to keep the color scheme.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...an-imagery-but-keep-color-scheme-per-reports/

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Washington is planning to have no Native American imagery, per a league source. This is probably one of the most obvious developments -- since the team name is considered an offensive slur. Either way, Washington will be moving away from anything even relating to Native Americans, whether it be weapons or headdresses/feathers.

Not long after Schefter's update, ESPN's John Keim reported that Washington plans to keep its colors of burgundy and gold "as of now."

One option that could be a nice fit is one that quarterback Dwayne Haskins is in support of: The Redtails. This name has an intriguing history as the Red Tails are a tribute to the planes flown by the Tuskegee Airmen, who were the first Black military aviators that served in the United States Army during World War II. Three of the first five admitted airmen were from Washington, serving as a connection to the city and the armed forces.

Sports in general. It's a valid example of a tribe name that native Americans may or may not mind.
I think you misunderstood my point but your point is well taken.

The Chicago Blackhawks are an excellent example, and include Native history as part of their name development.
