NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? What?

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

The good news is: we fired Bill Lazor.

The bad news is: our offense still sucks. Some fans are talking about rolling out Tannehill, blah, blah, blah. But when you have a QB that can't accurately throw a pass longer than 20 yards, no tricks and gimmicks will make things any better.

I wonder if the NFL refs and the MLB umps got together last year and decided to completely suck at their jobs over drinks.

Both have been worse than ever in the history of their respective games and it's inexplicable. They are deciding the outcomes of games now.

Oh, I don't know. Remember the great NFL zebra lockout of 2012? I lost track of the epic suck that came out of the scab ref crews that year. Their demeanor and skill levels indicated that they might have been recruited out of local JV and high school powder-puff leagues and had nary a clue about professional play. They didn't even seem to have given much interest to opening the league rulebook! I would say that was the worst year for referees in recent history, at least in the NFL. Can't speak to MLB, which may or may not be the case, but don't really care about that one much.

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

It hasn't been as bad as the replacement refs, but it's been pretty damned close lately. Just ineptitude, inexplicable calls, 5 minute breaks to figure out what to call (and then getting it wrong), calling a game super loose, then super tight, and back and forth, just a piss-poor showing from the refs this year. Honestly don't know how the players can even try and do anything, you either get penalized for looking at a player or a 15 yard bonus for stabbing them, and it changes at random. So may as well play super-physical and cheat a bit, and see if they want to call that. Better than playing conservatively and getting it called on you anyway...

Could be a function of the rulebook being a disaster and too hard to enforce, too. Or need full-time refs that take constant classwork mid-week and all off-season to get them back in control of things.

It's been a shitshow this year. Even ESPN, who has the NFL so far down their throat that it's amazing that they can even speak, has starting commenting on how bad it's been. When ESPN crew is closing their marque MNF broadcasts by saying that the refs sucked, again, you've gotta admit there's a problem that needs to be addressed.

I believe it's the NFL's own fault...

I don't know 2 things, #1 how the players can be expected to follow the rules (basically a tiny dot on the QB for example) or #2 how the refs can enforce the rule changes.

It's just really crap. I honestly think the NFL needs to regress about 10 years with it's rule changes.

Now on the baseball side, I didn't see it as bad as you I guess. I think replay has helped and most calls "get right".

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

Bruce Arians on officials: “They can’t count to three”

49ers' Boone: "I thought those refs sucked"

It's not good when both sides are complaining.

As far as MLB, the main problem was in the strike zone, and it was a big problem.

It was generally fine in the regular season (outside of the usual suspects like Angel Hernandez, Bob Davidson, C.B. Bucknor and Cowboy Joe), but in the ALCS and the World Series, the balls and strikes were just painful.

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

I love how they 'demoted' the crew to another game - because fuck whoever's playing that one, right?

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

And I'm sure that it had no bearing that the team they decided to fuck with the sub-par Refs is the Patriots. Pure coincidence, surely... :guffaw:

No, we can just see it better now.

Hell, the big 3 in Atlanta used to get calls 6 inches off the plate.

I think they actually call balls and strikes better now than ever.

See, if it was as consistent as great pitchers getting the calls all the time, it would be (almost) understandable.

But it was the most inconsistent outside/not outside BS I'd ever seen.

Same with the NFL, they can't even make the same bad call every time. They have to reinvent the ruling each time as though it wasn't written down somewhere.

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

I find the whole "It isn't a catch, it is a catch" crap infuriating. When you watch the replays of either a questionable catch or interception there is no way to know what the final ruling will be - it's like the refs pick an outcome randomly.

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

The worst is the extreme uncertainty seen in TD catch decisions.

Back in the day, it was quite simple. Did the ball cross the end-zone plane?

Yes? TD.
No? Not a TD.
Pretty simple.

Now, we not only have to know if it crossed the plane, but if the catcher caught and maintained control of the ball for more than a second; if the catcher proceeded to execute a "football move" before crossing the plane; if either the catcher's knee or elbow was down before the ball crossed the plane; or if any of these things happened prior to or after exiting the side-line or back-line plane; or all or some or none of the fucking above! All arbitrarily chosen.

What was it that Scotty famously said in TSFS of the Excelsior? "The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain". Someone's been taking a massive dump in the NFL rulebook lately and frequently and it's been clogged several miles deep!

Not entirely ready to place 100% of the blame on the zebras. The rule book has gotten so bloated, making any kind of reasonable decision is night on impossible. I would not want THAT bloody job!

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

^ Did they turn the NFL rulebook in to a Wiki page?

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

Well, we've seen players catch other players who have control of the ball be ruled a catch, so there's that.
