I am currently reading After the Fall and it is nice to see this thread. Specifically about first New Frontier novels, I always thought they were way over rated. I didn't like the end of the first four books, I thought it was silly, regardless of what it represented. After the Fall is my first jaunt into the NF universe in years, and I can appreciate the books for what they accomplished....in a way, they were the series which expanded the universe beyond TNG and DS9 era on screen trek.
That said....Peter David's writing really started to hurt the series. I am all for irony, or plays on words, or verbal sparring between characters but when it takes up every page, when it is part of every conversation....the characters lose who they are. At a couple of points during After the Fall I didn't even need to "guess", I just knew Peter David needed to insert yet another meaningless/unnecessary verbal spat that could be any character talking, really.
I am actually enjoying After the Fall enough, but the style of writing is.....predictable. Not funny.
