Next! Your choice for the next Doctor.

Though I think Marshall would play it just like in DIP if cast, I *have* seen him do Shakespeare, and he was surprisingly OK in it.

That's good to know. He'd just be such a boring choice. I'm with @StCoop i cant imagine Marshall is the best person for the job, not to say i don't think he can do it, but it would smack of the BBC making the decision, and if it is Chibnall's decision that he's the best person for the job then that raises questions about his judgement imo.

Yes the four modern doctors have been white men, but i don't think any one of them was a safe choice, certainly nowhere near as meh a choice as Marshall would be.

Which is not to say i wouldn't give him a chance, but i would be disappointed.

I'm going to be blunt: there's a enough talented actors out there it would be hard to find one who COULDN'T do the role. But, there is something about the right person for the job, the best person for the job that separates them from the pack. I do think all of the modern Doctors (actually, I would say ALL of the Doctors) have been some how iconic, specific, mysterious. More often than not, it's the writing that has let the actors down and not the other way around.

I'm a big fan of the movie Love, Actually, actually.... and I like Marshall's story in it--mostly because it's so silly and so oddly successful for the character. That said... Meh. Certainly if he's the choice, I'll give the new series a chance... but... sigh, I would love it if there was something about the next Doctor's casting that made me sit up and notice rather than sit back and go, "ok... sure... why not?"

I don't think resignation is the best step to take a series that is entering into it's 11th series.

I like Marshall (so sue me !) - he'd probably be my first choice.

I think there's probably some truth to the rumour. Marshall said recently that he loved Death In Paradise and would like to stay with it forever. Next thing you know he has quit over concerns regarding being away from his young family for half the year.

Walking away from a top rated show that is your dream job makes it sound like another dream job came up closer to home...

It'd be worth them casting Kris Marshall as the Doctor *if* it meant we had Sarah Martins as the companion. On, better still, cast her as the Doctor and Danny John-Jules as the companion...

I realized I think the reason I want the BBC to take a risk with casting is because I know with American television and it be so beholden to commercial obligations, they would take the safe and tested route.

As an American, I have the belief that the BBC, since it doesn't quite have the same obligations would be free to make bolder decisions.

I'm sure I might be wrong in that belief.

I don't mind the casting, as it could work, but I would also consider it a safe choice. But I find a lack of confirmation from the BBC to indicate that its not true.

Well they did say "no casting decisions have been made yet" in response to The Sun, which technically doesn't preclude it from being him but God I hope it's not.

I haven't read the 9 pages in this thread, but I'm going to guess this one is outside the box.

In the 50th anniversary special, it was established that a time lord can revisit old faces, and it was seriously implied that Tom Baker was a future version of The Doctor.

Based on that, and the fact that there WAS an explanation as to why the Doctor took Capaldi's face, maybe there is some way the Doctor can choose his appearance. And while I never watched Classic Who, wasn't there a situation where the Master was able to pick a new appearance?

If all of that is true, then maybe they can correct what I think is an injustice, and have Capaldi regenerate into Paul McGann. I know the 8th Doctor had a lot of audio adventures, but to me, those don't count. For me, I've seen the beginning and the end of the McGann era.

Why not start a new era and give the man a chance to actually have a run at the role?

Ok, so maybe that's unlikely, but I'd even take a multidoctor crossover, or in lieu of that, an actual adventure with him that lasts more than 10 minutes.

Very unlikely. He just took on a roll on another show, from what I understand.

Not really he possessed someone's body in 'The Keeper of Traken' one of the final 4th Doctor stories. As for Timelords/ladies choosing their appearance, the 2nd Romana played by Lala Ward did just that. She'd been cast in the final story of the previous season 'The Armageddon Factor' as Princess Astra and in the opening episode of the following season 'Destiny of the Daleks' (briefly revisited in last week's Dr. Who season opener) the Doctor thinks she's that character before she explains that she's Romana and she's regenerated, choosing that face. Also much earlier than that in the final 2nd Doctor story 'The War Games' the Timelords present the Doctor with a choice of faces for his next incarnation.

I'm going to go with the Romana example being the thing I was referring to. Sounds like it. I remember a Who fan saying something that they could choose their bodies.

I also consider the McGann idea very unlikely as well. But theoretically, if there is precedent for a time lord to choose his appearance, and Tom Baker certainly implied that the Doctor is going to do just that in the future, wouldn't a former Doctor returning to the role actually be possible?

It doesn't sound like anything BANS the idea, not that they will actually do it.

Getting back to McGann--even if he just took a role in another show, is it a British show or a US show? If it's a US network show, then I can see it being very difficult to return to Who, but if it's a British show, given that they have such short seasons, why COULDN'T he if he wanted. As recently as last June, he stated he would return if asked.

This might be moving off topic, but there really is no reason he can't return for a true multi-doctor story. OR, he could even have his own special, or a spinoff as the 8th Doctor.

If they can do Class, why couldn't they run off 10 episodes of an 8th Doctor story? Even better, make an arc, and tie it into something the current Doctor is doing, where they finish both stories with a crossover.

One thing about these writers, I think they are good enough to pull it off.

It's fiction. Anything is possible. There are no rules that can't be written around.

Doctor Who shoots for an extraordinary amount of time for British television. I think it would be difficult, and exhausting, to do both.

I have no idea who he is so i am 50/50 on him being the Dr.
He usually plays a doofus. He was on a show called My Family for like a million years which also starred Robert Lindsay and Pointy Lady (Zoe Wannamaker). Started out funny and got bad over time. He had the good sense to leave.

Kris Marshall is basically the UK's version of Kyle Bornheimer, I'd say.

It's probably I good thing I don't know these performers. That way, I don't have any preconceived biases against them. I remember a sizeable number of fans "distressed" at the notion of Catherine Tate appearing on the show, and my reaction was, "Uh? Who?" I guess it's one of the minor advantages of being a bloody Yank with little to no knowledge of (current) British pop and entertainment culture.
