It's been reported (but unverified) that Ejiofor wanted to do the role for only one series so he could continue to focus on films. That's a reasonable point and I don't blame him for making that a deal breaker.

The story that I heard -- and I stress, I have no confirmation for this -- is that Ejiofor was only interested in doing Doctor Who for one year and that, not money, was the sticking point in his negotiations with the BBC.
Maybe it depends where you're from. I had a Chinese friend politely correct me on not saying it over *20* years ago.
It may also depend on that person's experiences. There may have been someone who somehow used the term in a derogatory way.
Maybe, it didn't seem that way though. I was embarrassed as hell is all I know. He wasn't offended by me for sure, he knew I was completely oblivious to it and he just didn't want me to sound like a goober saying that around others. I hadn't even heard the term Asian at that point used in that manner.
I don't know of anyone that is grossly offended by it (myself included) I just tend to point out out for that exact reason; so they don't sound like a goober to someone else. It's more just like.. Oh man that sounds silly be careful.
The Mirror, The Sun, and the Hate Mail - though they're all quoting the same unnamed source - who knows? He'd be a safe and obvious choice, having so recently left Death In Paradise, but hardly the "Tennant type with transatlantic appeal" that the same reports actually quote the Beeb and wanting.
Knowing nothing about the guy but just looking at pictures, he would be the most bizarre looking actor to play the Doctor. He seems to have two different looks in the pictures I've seen. He either looks like he stepped out of a horrible Seth Rogen comedy (aka any Seth Rogan comedy), or he looks like a really bitter life time office worker (along with one or two pics where he looks like he's stuck on a deserted island).
None of that has anything to do with his ability to play the Doctor, of course. Still, I'd even rather have a "Tennant like" actor over Marshall, just based off his general style.

Basically his character in Death In Paradise came over as... this is *exactly* how he'd play the Doctor. Which is why he'd be safe and obvious, if you see what I mean- his performance would be a known quantity to a great degree. Doesn't make it a good, right, or true, thing though. Just.... Meh. He wouldn't be be great, he wouldn;t (probably) be awful.
Would be more fun if this was a blind and he's cast as the next Master, actually.
I'm hoping this isn't true, I can't picture him as the Doctor at all. That said I've been wrong about basically every casting decision on the show so far so maybe I should just keep quiet...
I think he could play the Doctor, but I'd agree with @Lonemagpie , he would be an utterly safe, lightweight and bland choice. I'm not sure which would annoy me more, Marshall or that Tennant clone mentioned last week. I really kinda hope we get neither, but if we do it does feed into my fears that Chibnall will make a perfectly enjoyable, but incredibly generic sci-fi show.

Has Marshall ever worked with Chibnall before? I've only seen him in is Love, Actually and his character was exactly the one thing I didn't like about the film.
I'm pretty sure Kris Marshall would be the red line for me as far as watching the show goes. There's no argument anyone could make that would convince me he's the best man for the job, let alone the best person.
And it's not like I haven't got a mountain of episodes to watch, books and comics to read and audios to listen to, to satisfy my Who fix.

I thought that was Matt Smith.
Marshall looks a bit average on the Doctor scale. Right there with Peter Davison.
The thing is, they haven't made a bad casting choice yet. Remember Matt Smith? Everyone lost their minds. Matt who? Who is that? How can he possibly be the Doctor? And yet...he did a wonderful job.
Assuming it's Kris Marshall...let's just wait and see. These people know what they're doing. He could've given a great audition. None of us were in that room, so we have no idea how he'd play it.

And that's just about the only reason why I'm not upset. Sure, I had my own expectations and wants for the casting, but especially after Matt Smith (my third favorite Doctor), I'm willing to give Marshall a chance if it is indeed him. But that being said, I will come away from the casting announcement somewhat disappointed because the perceived notion that he's the "safe choice."
Though I think Marshall would play it just like in DIP if cast, I *have* seen him do Shakespeare, and he was surprisingly OK in it.
