Any one recommend a decent tv show I could watch ??

I normally watch a tv show in bulk watching multiple episodes a night until the end running through a season easily in a week.

Went years without watching tv so now catching up on all the shows worth watching that I missed

I have watched the complete (or up to date in some cases )tv shows in the last year or so ( not counting trek)

Breaking Bad.......
The Shield
The Wire
House
Mad Men
Law and order /criminal intent/svu
Waking the Dead
New Tricks
The Body Farm

as ye can gather its mostly cop shows and not a big fan of supernatural stuff.

Any suggestions on a good show that dont end after a single season ?

How long do you want the series to run? Because the first season of Boomtown is impressive at 18 episodes (and the poorly revamped season second was short-lived and never released on DVD). Life was also intriguing for the two seasons it ran.

How about Castle which is still on the air and will probably be on for a few more seasons?

don't know how far back you want to go, but how about Due South?

(only seasons 1 and 2 though, the rest are a bit meh)

NCIS is a great show - the chemistry of that cast (and the corresponding chemistry of those characters) is really unrivaled, anywhere - which is no doubt why cast turnover on that show is so low. I think this past season was a bit 'meh' (although by no means 'bad' - just not up to their usual standard of 'awesome')...but they are also wrapping up their 9th season, so I don't think we can reasonably expect it to be as fresh and new as it used to be. Put it this way - I will be there for S10.

NCIS: LA is also good. It got off to a bit of a slow start with their first season, but once the show found it's own footing and made some adjustments in the cast, it improved greatly - very good show with it's own identity now. I think they are wrapping S3. Chris O'Donnell, LLCoolJ, and Linda Hunt are all particularly great. Another show I will continue to watch after this year.

I also agree about Castle. I will continue to watch this one.

Bones was good for the first several seasons, but this last season (S7) has really gone downhill into shark-jumping territory. I started watching this show because of David Boreanaz (I was a fan of Buffy and Angel) but got attached to the rest of the cast and watched it for the ensemble for several years. Next year, if I were to keep watching it, I would be back to David Boreanaz being pretty much the only reason.

But S1 thru S6 were good. :)

I would also recommend Cold Case...but you can't get that on DVD (it will never be released because of the music rights, I'm quite sure) so you'd have to try and piece it together via cable viewing or 'alternative means'. Which might be tough since there are 7 seasons. I saw you in the SVU thread...and just FYI, Danny Pino was on Cold Case beginning to end (except for a couple of episodes at the very beginning).

Finally, if you have never seen Homicide: Life on the Street, you owe it to yourself. That show was cutting edge gritty police drama when it was on...and had an amazing cast. Bonus points because it was where the character of John Munch was born. ;)

I second Boomtown. Great stuff.
Deadwood--if you haven't seen it already. Doesn't get much grittier than that.
Hell on Wheels---Deadwood Meets the Railroad. Great stuff. Pilot is just so-so; the rest is fascinating.
Justified---great cop show, just finished its third season.
Luther-British cop show, phenomenal performance by Idris Elba.
Whitechapel. British cop show. The first two seasons deal with copycat killers and the third season is a few different, bizarre murder cases. A wonderful cast with brilliant characters.

Even if Alcatraz hadn't been cancelled, I wouldn't recommend that one! It's tedious and goes nowhere. I'm not convinced it would have ever gone anywhere worthwhile, regardless of how many years it had.

If you've never seen Dexter, check it out. The first two seasons are particularly good.

Prison Break
's first season is one of the best seasons of TV I've ever seen. Subsequent seasons never recapture that magic, but it's still basically entertaining.

I've recently started watching Boardwalk Empire, a very entertaining and beautifully produced series about Prohibition with some famous gangsters at the beginning of their careers.

I generally hate cop shows, but I make a big exception for Justified. Like The Wire, it's not "just" a cop show by any stretch.

Sons of Anarchy
is a great show - like Breaking Bad, it's the flip side of a cop show, from the "bad guys" point of view.

I'm not sure if zombies is included in the "supernatural stuff" you don't like, but you should really check out The Walking Dead sometime.

You haven't mentioned it so I will suggest, as did auntiehill before me, Whitechapel.

And I would hughly recommend Sherlock.

Also Silent Witness and Midsomer Murders if you haven't already watched them up the present season.

I'm usually not into fantasy show but I did watch the first season of Game of Thrones and enjoyed it.Give it a try.:)

Dollhouse (don't listen to the naysayers, it's really very good)
Alias (rocky 3rd season, but usually awesome)

if you liked the shield you might like Homicide: Life on the streets.

it's getting kind of old now though

I love Murdoch Mysteries. I am not sure why I overlooked mentioning it. I have the first four seasons on DVD, as well as the movies, and I am waiting for the fifth season to become available.

If you liked the Shield I'd recommend the Chicago Code, since its by the same writer.

It only lasted a season but the writers were given enough advance notice that the show was able to end in a way that seemed as if they'd intended it to be a mini-series all along.

And you didn't list the Sopranos. If you haven't seen that I'd go for it immediately.

Twin Peaks lasted two seasons and went out, unfortunately, on a cliffhanger. But if you can force yourself to stop after the conclusion of the "who killed Laura Palma" arc (about midway through season 2), it's also a great limited run series, albeit with supernatural elements (though less than Walking Dead)

I'd highly, highly, recommend Six Feet Under. Probably my second favorite HBO series ever after the Sopranos.

Finally, as far as cop shows go, let me recommend the best one ever: Hill Street Blues. I rewatched the first two seasons recently and it's not really dated at all.

Yeah, same here. It really stands out from the crowd when every other cop show is set in the same environments. I applaud it for taking a risk and doing something different.

It's short, but you should check out the UK Life on Mars. It's a Time travel /cop show set in the early 70's. It's known for the goofy Gene Hunt character, but it has some pretty sobering and gritty moments there too. If you like it watch Ashes to Ashes, which is pretty much a continuation set in the early 80's. It's almost as good once it gets it's footing, but Life on Mars is a true masterpiece.

I second Twin Peaks if you haven't seen it. My favorite show after Trek.

I'm glad you liked Whitechapel; I really liked it. The chemistry between the detectives is great and often understated. I appreciated that the writers didn't dumb it down and make everything so flipping obvious. The character arc of the historian is also, I think, very moving.

Awake was an amazing show. It just ended so I don't know if there's a legal way to watch it, but if you can find it it will be very much worth it.
It's only one season, but I thought it was absolutely fantastic.
