Next DVD movie?

I think Joe Mallozzi mentioned that they'd finished the recut, enhanced version of Children of the Gods (with original music!), so it should be out sooner, rather than later. That's sort of like another DVD movie.

When the actors are free or at least the ones they want, they will do a 3rd SG-1 movie, which will most likely be the final time we see O Neill. The way Brad Wright is talking about it, this appears to be his final apperance in SG-1 and it could also be the last SG-1 movie for a while because I think they will focus fully on SG-A, which has more rooms for many movies due to only lasting 5 seasons and we will have SG-U too.

That's not a DVD movie, that's a waste of time.

"Let's not make anything new because we aren't creative, let's just redo a 13 year old pilot!" - TPTB

Or testing the Blu-Ray waters since the first two DVD movies are coming out on Blu-Ray discs this could mean that there's plans for SG1 to come out in that format as well.

^Season one will take some serious remastering.

I can understand why they want to rework "Children of the Gods". It doesn't fit with their "family" vision for the show at all.

Probably not as much work that was needed for the Star Trek TOS remastered editions.

For a show that started its life on Showtime and aired on that channel for five years, I'm surprised/disappointed that they didn't keep the "adult" nature of the pilot. I mean, obviously someone (or several someones) thought they'd take that direction, but that changed by the second episode.

I guess part of the problem with simply the era. Today we've had Sex in the City, The Sopranos, Deadwood, Rome, etc. all on premium cable and with adult content. But in 1997, I guess they figured that the show had to end up in syndication to survive, and it was easier to simply produce the show to syndication standards rather than Showtime standards and then spend money to cut/edit it for syndication.

It'd be interesting to see what a sci-fi show could do on HBO or Showtime.

^It'd be a ridiculous gore-fest with endless swearing, and end up being exactly the opposite of what an "adult" science fiction show should be.

Battlestar Galactica pushes the boundaries sometimes but never really crosses them (despite a trimmed line of dialogue here and there).

SG-1's PTB never wanted the show to have adult content, but Showtime insisted there had to be something adult in the pilot, so the nude scene was added.

That was the extent of their requirements, and aside from a few swear words here and there, SG-1 stayed relatively family-friendly during its run. And I suspect that was Sci-Fi who insisted on the swearing being removed, given Ark of Truth and Continuum make several uses of the word "shit."

^Given the meat cleaver editing Battlestar Galactica suffered when they included swearing and references to "head", it was obviously the Sci-Fi Channel. Those scenes weren't touched on Space in Canada, Sky One in the UK or the DVDs.

At first, I was actually surprised Space didn't bleep out "shit" when it was used on BSG, however I've recently learned the only words that get bleeped in Canada are "fuck" and "cock."

^While here on the BBC, for instance, they wouldn't allow the f-word or shit on before the watershed (after 9pm the rules change and you can do pretty much whatever you want). However, they regularly allow James May on Top Gear to say "cock" as an expression of anger before the watershed. It's only ever bleeped out on morning/early afternoon repeats.

I think that's a mischaracterization of what can be done without "broadcast standards" interfering.

Agreed.

Oh please, because of one scene it wasn't a 'family' show? I rather have COTG minus the nudity than Space Race or Irresistable.

Showtime wanted a more grown up show, so the writers added boobs. However the show was an instant hit and I think Showtime then went "Screw it, they can do what they want".

Exactly.

Imagine a sci-fi show with the depth and scope of, say, Rome. Imagine something like B5 on HBO but without the PG restrictions.

Not sure why people still think cable = useless titillation and obscenity for the hell of it. The number of awards one by cable TV channels for their programmes in the last ten years should be enough to persuade anyone that isn't the case.

There's a vast number of differences between B5 and Rome not the least of which is budget and the fact that if you remove restrictions you get shows like The Sopranos, Deadwood and Rome and there's little evidence that without the restrictions you won't be getting nudity and curse words since that's what people seem to think that's what "adult" means.

I don't need to imagine, that show was already made, it's called Odyssey 5. However it had so much depth and scope the asshole president of Showtime canceled it. It would never work anywhere else because the Earth blows up, and if you see the Earth blow up you would say "fuck" a lot too.
