short but sweet interview with Quinto at IESB ...
Awesome. I'm happy to hear that he plans to sit down and extensively research the role, and is willing to acknowledge he had at least on misconception about Star Trek (i.e. that Vulcans don't have emotions).

What the hell is up with that guy's fashion taste? He's really into plaid!

He's such a liar, "oh I didn't know I had an Internet fanbase." In another interview, he actually KNEW that slash fanfic about him and Mohinder is called "Mylar" (he corrected the interviewer who used the alternate but less common term, "Sylhinder.") BIG faker! He reads all that stuff, he's probably spying on us, too.

Yeah, he's saying the right things about Star Trek...hah! The eyebrows are under sentence of death. Better go alert the gang on TWOP.

This is excellent news. A good script is the most important thing but if the rest of the casting turns out to be this good... Here's hoping. :D

He looks the part, but I haven't seen him anything yet. I'll have to check out his work.

Hmmm... the way Quinto seems so familiar with the Vulcan emotion suppression issue makes me thing that will be a subject the movie will touch upon.

It would be silly if the movie didn't touch upon that subject. Remember how emotional Spock was in the first two pilots? He wouldn't have full control yet.

Actually, I'm just hoping that Quinto speaks with a slightly lower tone to his voice. He LOOKS good, but his voice is actually rather high. That's what I kept thinking all the way through the interview... sort of like Spock with helium... ;)

Yeah, I feel the same way. I'm big on voices; I've decided to accept whatever the new actor looks like (and he looks decently enough like a young Spock), but if he doesn't sound anything like Nimoy, it's gonna be really hard for me to accept. I'm not saying he has to do an imitation, of course, but if he sounds completely different, it will be a disconnect for me.

So do I complain now or later. Man I am having no luck in stuff I like being made or remade being anything that interest me. Since all these properties are popular I guess that just says I am an outdated relic.

Maybe the onset of puberty happens a lot later in Vulcans.

You know, the one thing that bothers me about this casting is that it's so good. So, when the kirk casting is announced we might be disappointed because our expectations are now so high.

be really interested in seeing how he plays it. Spock is half human so he should not be devoid of emotion. in fact he shows emotion several times in TOS, he just tries to cover it up or hide it. My favorite was that episode, I think Amok Time, where he thinks he killed Kirk, then back on the ship, Kirk strolls in and he gets this gigantic excited grin on his face "JIMM!!!!" then tries to cover it up  He's just... more reserved with it.

ALL Vulcans have emotions ----they just have a strong culture to suppress them, so that it should be the same thing as having NO emotions...certainly makes it easy to explain to several species of the galaxy.

p.s. another voice of support for Quinto

Vulcans have more violent emotions than humans, which is why they suppress them in such a fetishistic way. It's the only way they can have a functioning society. If this hasn't become canon before, it became canon as of that episode where T'Pol told Trip all of it, point-blank. And no ragging on ENT, it's canon when they come up with stuff that's good, and that was good. ;) Besides, I think this was canon before.

So the half that Spock needs to suppress is actually the Vulcan half. He doesn't want to admit this, so he tells everyone how it's the human half. He might even have been brainwashed growing up so much that he sorta believes this himself on some level.

I wonder if someone is going to give Quinto a big tutorial about The Truth About Vulcans? Well, they should. It's somewhat complicated but makes for a psychologically oustanding character.

well, I am pretty darned excited. I just heard about this as I've been very busy lately. I love Heroes and I really like ZQ. some brilliant casting there. but I am hoping we don't all come crashing down to earth after they choose Kirk. yikes! choosing even a passable Kirk would be really hard though. for all his quirks, Shatner made Kirk so unique, so inimitable in a serious way that even a tiny slip could make it seem like all those Kirk parodies on SNL, MadTV, youtube etc etc. and that's a real trap. the very last thing we want is for the audience to laugh at the actor playing Kirk because he reminds them of some of Shatner's typical Kirkian gestures. I shudder at the very thought. though a little of it wouldn't be bad, but not all through the movie.

Spock, McCoy et al are much easier to play. they are not larger than life, Kirk is.

anyway, Temis, ITA about the raging vulcan emotions. just what else was Amok Time all about?

I think Quinto should use these next few months to watch watch and watch TOS, talk to Nimoy and, if possible Dorothy Fontana, and even Jolene Blalock. I think she had a pretty good hold on the Vulcans even if she had to herself stray from it. she's a fan first, and she knew the lore, Vulcans and all.

gotta run... good going, btw, in the other thread -- nice photoshops of quinto as spock!

They coulda blamed it all on pon farr. ;) But I think T'Pol's point was, Vulcans are like that all the time. It just gets worse every seven years. (Or the seven year thing is the result of their repression, wasn't that stated in the episode, too?)

yeah, it was, I guess. but I remember when I first watched Amok Time (god, it's been too long!!) I had this feeling that something like that doesn't just come out of emotions, it comes out of EEEEEMOOOOOOSHUNSSSSS...

:p

aka. raging ones.

ENT did get some things right. let's face it. it's canon. ;)
