News: Qunito is cast as Spock

^ I think you're right. I'd be surprised if Bones didn't make an appearance and I hope Scotty will, but so far it's only K/S as far as we know.

Well, given that we know it:
  • Is a Star Trek movie set around the time period of the original;
  • Features Kirk;
  • Features Spock;
  • Features the Starship Enterprise;
I'd say there's plenty of reason to expect the other supporting characters. That isn't to say it's definite, but until I see supporting evidence to the contrary, I expect to see Scotty, McCoy, Sulu, Uhura, and maybe even Chekov or Gary Mitchell.

The movie could start in 2263 with Kirk taking over the Enterprise from Pike. There's a missing two year gap until 2265 with "Where No Man Has Gone Before" - that implies that the first two years of the "five year mission" have gone unfilmed and untold before now.

That could mean Gary Mitchell rather than the "regulars" needs to be cast. Jared Padelecki would be right for the part, especially since he needs to be a few years younger than Kirk or Spock. Maybe the mysterious "Number One" would be first officer still (Mitchell was first officer by WNMHGB, right? and Spock was science officer). Claire Danes would be perfect for that role.

During those first two years, McCoy wasn't in the picture, and it's unclear when Sulu, Uhura or Scotty came onboard. Maybe they could be introduced in later pictures.

You could easily have a three-movie trilogy that dealt with those first two years, and segue into a TV series that picks up where the original started, with the last three years. Only "different stories." Hey we only saw HALF of what happened, right? :D

That's the Master Plan! Let's go for it.

I hope they don't give us a bunch of introductions to many TOS characters. Gives us something to hope for in the sequels. :-)

if all they do tomorrow is announce him as spock without having found a kirk yet then they really dont know what they're doing

how could you be sure of one and not the other without knowing how they work together

Who says they haven't? For all we know, they've already settled on a Kirk but couldn't get the deal closed in time to meet the arbitrary deadline of Comic-Con.

Eh, don't worry. That Quinto guy would have chemistry with the furniture on the set. As long as they don't completely blow the Kirk casting, they've got it made.

Really simple, you casts one and audition the other against the first actor its done often and all the time. Damn for LOTRs they changed the actor playing Aragorn and shipped Vigo Mortessen to take the role.

I they know exactly what they're doing - looking for things to complain about I guess and grasping at straws even...

who knows? maybe they have somebody, but he's not signed yet. I'd imagine both are pretty hard parts to cast.

But don't don't let me stand in the way of anyone's certainty that the film will FAIL...or SUCK...or whatever :)

The word you're looking for is "FLOP!!!"

But it won't. Unless it does. Which it shouldn't. Unless it sucks.

This is based on your extensive experience as a casting director?

Just because there aren't any rumors about the Kirk actor doesn't mean he hasn't been cast yet. Just like the Qunito rumors doesn't mean he's been cast. Remember how persistent the Matt Damon rumors were?

Why yes, isn't it obvious? This is the guy responsible for casting... ummm... ummm... Help me out here, Beverstein, what major motion pictures did you work on again?

Oh, I guess not, huh?

For that matter, have you even ever bothered to watch the "special features" on any of your DVDs? A lot of times they'll show screen tests, and you'll see someone (say, Christopher Reeves) playing the character they've been cast as, against a whole series of different actors (say, all the possible "Lois Lane" actresses). If you're REALLY trying to get chemistry between characters, it helps if you can put your various candidates for one role alongside your assumed/preferred actor for the other role.

Granted, sometimes you also get REALLY LUCKY... like how they brought in Vigo Mortensen for Lord of the Rings and he was far better than the original choice... but by and large, I don't think that's how it usually happens.

(FYI, here's a thread with the original actor cast as Aragorn, in-costume)
