Newcomer with an ambitious project

He did tell me about the Animated Series. I'm still sort of tossing around the idea of catching it. He told me that the show's creator officially took it out of the "canon" of the show. Basically, I haven't decided yet. I figure I have some time until I get to the end of The Original Series, where that show fits in.

Actually, the Animated Series isn't "non-canon" anymore. That hasn't been true for more than a decade and it's just now that people are starting to realize this. I'd say go ahead and watch it. At the rate you're watching it would only take you a week or so anyway.

Also, you might consider doing so Trek Lit reading as you go along as well. Specifically the books which continue each series stories after their finales. For example, with Enterprise, you are definitely going to want to see what happens to these characters and these situations after the rather abrupt ending of the series. So far there have been two novels that continue the Enterprise storyline after the series finale, The Good that Men Do, and Kobayashi Maru. I'd highly recommend that you check them out when the time comes.

There are other books I'd recommend reading as you progress as well, if you would like to hear my opinions.

Agreed on both fronts however the books can probably wait until he has seen all the live-action / animated material. The animated series isn't quite canon but it's been referenced in Enterprise and TOS-R quite a few times and there are a few good stories in the bunch ('Yesteryear', 'The Time Trap', 'The Jihad', 'The Slaver Weapon', etc) so it's worth it and at the rate you're going would only take you a day and a half to watch.

Interesting project. I'd recommend starting a new thread for each group of episodes to keep the chaos under control here.

"Broken Bow" severely disappointed me as a premiere, because I wanted ENT to be far more of a departure from the 24th C style. I wanted it to be wilder and grungier and more desperate, but it just seemed like we were in for More of The Same(TM).

But if you watch ENT first, rather than last, this might not be so apparent.

Before I get into the next disc of Enterprise, I have a question for you guys. Looking at the spreadsheet my uncle gave me, can someone explain (without spoilers if possible) why there is an Enterprise episode towards the end of The Next Generation?

Thoughts on Star Trek: Enterprise disc 3:

Civilization (**/*****) - This didn't have a lot of life to it. The (kind-of)romance between Captain Archer and the alien female was dull and contributed nothing to the already un-remarkable story. I did, however really like the fact that the crew was out of their element on the planet. It did a nice job showing that nothing is as it seems in deep space.

Fortunate Son (***/*****) - First off, I haven't mentioned it yet but I really love the concept of "space boomers" and Ensign Mayweather's ties to them. Anthony Montgomery was competent, but ultimately not quite good enough to effectively carry the episode. This didn't make me like the concept of space boomers any less, but it didn't really add any layers to the idea.

Cold Front (*****/*****) - This was excellent. I find the temporal cold war storyline fascinating and innovative, and this did a pretty nice job advancing that storyline. It added some interesting new elements to villains first seen in Broken Bow. The Daniels character was awesome and I was very suprised to see him killed. Scott Bakula was also a standout here.

Silent Enemy (****/*****) - Some nice character development for Reed, and a nice action-adventure story to go along with it. The aliens they encountered here were pretty scary and overpowering. It was also refreshing to see aliens that didn't look remotley human. I'll be interested to see if they turn up again down the road. Bakula did a really nice job here as well. This episode had my favorite musical score thus far as well.

You don't want to know. It's probably one of the biggest talking points on this entire board and you may not want an opinion on it yet. Trust me. ;)

Personally, I would have gone for production order, but it will be interesting to get a different perspective on things.

Yeah, I think that's actually a good idea. We're on two pages already and thats just for twelve episodes. How do you feel about doing a new thread for each season? This could serve as the Enterprise season one thread. That should keep the length of the thread reasonable.

It's because this episode plays out on the holodeck of the ENT-D with Riker (and to a lesser degree Troi) participating and watching. Hopefully, that was unspoilerish enough. Come to think of it, if you put it like that it sounds kind of interesting but it really isn't. Do yourself a favor and just pretend it doesn't exist...

WARNING TO TrekFan2Be, SPOILERS IN THIS POST.

I think it's a real serious mistake to watch Enterprise (the LAST series) first, but I guess it's too late now.

Why do you think that?

I agree with Forbin. It would be best to watch them as they were aired. Mostly because in Enterprise you get a nice nod here and there to the other series. There's those episodes explaining why Klingons lose their forehead ridges for example and yet without watching TOS or DS9s 'Trials and Tribbilations' episodes it doesn't mean as much to the fan. What about first contact with the Romulans? without watching all the other series first it means nothing, it's just as wortless as all the other races they come across in Ent.

Enterprise IMO is a series specifically for people who are already Trek fans and are completely familiar with the other series first.

Perhaps, but it also serves as a very accessible introduction to the world of Star Trek. Having recently concluded ENT and watching TOS after that, ENT really serves as a nice setup for much that is taken for granted on TOS. One of the exceptions being In a Mirror, Darkly, where the episode is much more fun if you've seen Mirror, Mirror and The Tholian Web first.

Nah, it's probably more fun for someone who comes to it without preconceptions based on the previous continuity of "Star Trek."

I'm surprised you didn't like "Terra Nova" but I share your sentiments about "The Andorian Incident" and "Breaking the Ice". Enterprise has a bad reputation although it isn't nearly as bas as some people claim. Glad you like it so far. And yeah, Montgomery, who plays Mayweather, isn't a very good actor, at least not on ENT.

I don't remember "Terra Nova" as particularly good or particularly bad. I do remember being rather giddy at how much I was enjoying "The Andorian Incident" when I watched it on first broadcast. "Breaking The Ice" seemed a rather hum-drum episode after that one, except for my geekish fascination with the design of the Vulcan ship.

It's really quite cool to read the first reactions of someone who's just getting acquainted with "Star Trek" and is enjoying "Enterprise" so much. I just may have to find my tape (oh, those were long ago days) of "The Andorian Incident..."

I remember "Breaking The Ice" fondly because the Vulcan Captain doesn't go out of his way to please the humans, which I thought was authentic, and because of the character lesson Archer learns in this episode. The one thing I found intriguing about Enterprise from the beginning was that they had a flawed captain for a change.

That's something I really like about Captain Archer so far. He makes mistakes that I can relate to. Many of the decisions he makes are decisions that I would quite likely make myself. He really is a very human and identifiable.

Hey, TrekFan2Be! Welcome to the board and to the world of Trek!

A word of caution as you dive in... what you have tapped into here at TrekBBS are not your ordinary fans. This is a group of people -- myself included -- who know this stuff inside and out. Who eat, sleep, breathe and occassionally excrete Trek. Who have analyzed, re-analyzed, and over-analyzed every aspect of Trek.

This board is fun as are the peope. And opinions here are passionate. But they are also very diverse. And not necessarilly representative of what the average TV viewer might think. In fact, they're probably most often not representative. And usually divided 50/50. Just ask "Star Trek: The Motion Picture - masterpiece or crap?" and you can do about 3 weeks worth of discussion.

My point in all this? Enjoy the forums, but don't take anything said here too seriously. Don't let the very strongly held opinions of our very vocal fanbase send you into any series or episode with a bunch of preconceptions that will ruin it for you. And, for goodness sakes, avoid the spoilers like the plague.

Again, welcome aboard! I hope you enjoy the ride.

Yes...I too can't wait for your reviews..what age range are you is so we can get a feel as to 'who' you are...meaning, will TOS have much meaning to you at all since it is considered 'dated' by many of the new fans..

I'm 18 years old. I don't think production values will affect my opinion of Star Trek: The Original Series. I'm an enormous film buff, and have seen hundreds of films from the era of the original series. I see older series and films like I would view a play. The sets, costumes and effects are merely meant to spark your own mental images of what is happening.

This is from TrekFan2Be:

just tell people that im having trouble with my account and as soon as I get everything sorted out I'll have reviews for disks 4 and 5 assuming it will be sometime tomorrow
He changed some account info & now he's locked out until they fix it for him. We have top men working on this. Top. Men. (and women... heheh) :alienblush:

Has anyone been made aware of this problem (specifically Antony)?
I contacted M'Sharak for him & M'Sharak replied with a link to Bonz. He e-mailed Bonz. He hasn't received the e-mail to complete confirmation... that's the status so far.
