Just finished watching World Enough and Time. After reading all the horror stories of folks trying to stream, I logged onto their site, clicked on the small flash, and just left it to stream. Several hours (and several completed household chores) later, I got to sit down and watch a real live, honest to god episode of Star Trek!
I have been critical of the NV team before. I was less than impressed with Come What May, enjoyed In Harm's Way for what it was (and embarrased by it as well, WAY too fan wank for me) and dug To Serve All My Days (but wish it had served the fans more than it did Koenig's need to have closure.) I cried foul over James Cawley's hair, complained about less than stellar acting, hated the cinematography and editing, etc, etc... But, with their fourth installment, I think they've done it. I felt like I was watching Classic Trek tonight. With their limited resources, they created an excellent hour of Trek, and hopefully they'll get around to releasing a high quality, downloadable version in the near future!
First off, the writing is stellar. It's Sulu's story front and center, but it's also a poignant Kirk tale as well. It utilizes all of the characters well and takes its time to develop. The direction is the best yet, truly on par with professional television. Marc Scott Zicree deserves kudos and more directing gigs!!
George Takei... words can't describe. I never thought Sulu would bring me to tears. His performance is incredible. Christina Moses is a a treasure and an incredible find. The two of them have great chemistry together. The FX, for a no budget, fan produced endeavour put Enterprise to shame! The virtual sets, the shuttle fly through in the shattered BOP, amazing.
But, my surprise is the NV cast. All of them truly stepped up! James Cawley makes James Kirk his own. His scenes with Christina Moses are very good, he flawlessly exudes Kirk's charm, keeps his performance understated and subtle for the most part. He reminded me of Shatner's portrayal of Kirk in TWOK, not over the top, but measured. I have no problem thinking of you as Captain, Mr. Cawley. Fine job!
Jeff Quinn continues to improve his performance of Spock. I am sad to see he won't be in the next outing Blood and Fire. James Kelley is a good Dr. McCoy, better than he was in To Serve All My Days. Sill some room for improvement, but getting there.
John Lim is excellent as Sulu. He steps up his game to perectly compliment Takei's portrayal. I believed he was the younger Sulu.
Andy Bray is back as Chekov, unfortunaely with little to do (not that the story needs a strong Chekov presence,) Uhura gets to do more than say "Hailing Frequencies Open," with a touching scene.
Charles Root as Mr. Scott... I'm going to take a different approach than other reviews I've read online. Yes, I am aware Mr. Root posts here, but still, the man put in work to bring us Scotty and it serves nothing to sit here and bray "You suck!" Which he doesn't, BTW, but I will be truthful and say I'm not feeling his Scotty here. What I thought was missing was Scotty's feelings towards the crew. Case in point, the transporter room scene where he's trying to rescue Sulu. Scotty would have been more determined, more emotional I think with Sulu's life in his hands. Scoty always understood and felt the consequences if he wasn't able to pull off a miracle, and that always showed in the character. That's what I think is missing from the performance and I offer this as a critique that could assist Mr. Root in his future performances, if he so chooses.
I am really looking forward to Blood and Fire (great preview!!) CBS/Paramount needs to seriously consider backing the NV team financially and with distribution. They would make a killing off of these (I'd pay 2 bucks for an Itunes download) and keep Trek alive until the Abrahms movie comes out. (Plus, we could get a NV ep once every month perhaps?!)
