New Voyages-"World Enough"

Ok Mike, I'll suppose you are running Windows.

First: download a torrent client (the program to download torrents files). I recommend uTorrent. You can download it from here: http://download.utorrent.com/1.7.2/utorrent.exe

Second: execute the software. It'll ask if you want to create shortcuts on your start menu, quick launcher and desktop. Choose what you prefer and click OK.

Third: uTorrent will ask if you want to associate the progran to *.torrent files. Click Yes.

Fourth: go to http://newvoyages.blogsite.org/ and click over the link to WEaT torrent and choose to open when asked.

Fifth: A window will appear on uTorrent. Confirm it.

Sixth: wait for the download. When done, go to the folder where the file was save and watch it.

These are really basic steps. If you have further doubts let us know.

Ok, here's the latest, I downloaded it and Quicktime. (can't forget Quicktime), but it appears the file is corrupted. There are green screens, screen freezes and and digital tiling, much like the rain fade from a satellite dish.

I tried to purge the old file and do it again, but no soap. Any suggestions?

I have finally viewed the episode and I am really blown away. I am not going to pick it apart because in my mind it was wonderful. I was highly entertained and tuned the real world out for one hour and four minutes.

Mr. George Takei--holy crap! I never knew he was that damn good......I really wish he had more times to shine like that in the "official" Trek productions. I do not want to give anything away but he was VERY powerful on the screen.

I wish Mr Crawley and company would produce a whole hour of Capt Sulu and the Excelsior with the same quality. I think that would be great to see.

Over all I am just stunned at the writing and overall quality of this production. AND even though they are having problems.....they met their release date!!

We are in the same ballpark for sure. :D

I would love to see NV produce a couple of "Excelsior" projects. Hell, I would gladly pay good money to see a Capt. Sulu episode or two.

I too will wait for a download without Torrent. Hopefully someone will upload the ep and post a link here. Be better if NV did it themselves.
You're not the only one. I've heard from a few others who have taken that position. I know that I had to use my son's system to retrieve the episode and that having a Torrent client (among other software options) on either of my other systems (used for work) is grounds for termination.

Install the web browser Opera - that comes with a built in torrent application. Then if anyone asks you can say that you just installed a different web browser :D

Well, not being a big fan of the original series (DS9 was far and away my fav.) I wasn't all that hyped up about seeing this show.

That being said, I was genuinely impressed by the last couple episodes even though there was definitely a been there, done that feel to both. (especially aired back to back)

This episode, like others have pointed out, definitely felt for the first time like it could have been an original episode and acting by the principals aside (which was passable but not much more) thought it was easily as good as any TOS episode save a few of the classics.

I haven't tried the video file available on torrent because I'm with the one from "Magic" site, so I don't know if they are the same.

I recommend a player called VLC (VideoLAN Client) available at this link http://downloads.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/0.8.6c/win32/vlc-0.8.6c-win32.exe that sometimes play videos that others players don't. Just download, install, run the program, click on "File" and "Quick open file..." and play it.

Does it work?

I finally was able to view the episode this morning. As many here have already stated, I found the episode to be extremely well done and it sure did "feel" like a true TOS episode. Acting on a whole was good and Mr. Takei was outstanding.

As for Scotty, well, I felt his role suffered from too much dialog. In TOS, Scotty usually had just a few well delivered lines per episode. I think in this case "less would have been more". My only other nit would be the amount of technobabble in this episode. Seemed excessive to me. TOS was rather light on technobabble, this was pushing the Voyager end of the spectrum. Again, sometimes less is more.

All in all a great outing and everyone at New Voyages should be extremely proud of the episode! Great job James!

A lot of companies are putting a real emphasis on staying as vanilla as possible, so anything beyond right-click, save as and Windows Media Player can get you in trouble.

Another reason I'm glad I own my own business...

MikeH,

I went through the same issues on the first torrent download. Eventually I got a file that works correctly. The episode is worth the hassle.

I'd put it on my ftp site but I don't want to offend the NV folks.

Being in IT I can only imagine some of the phone ceonversations that have happened between all the parties involved in the last week or so...

Hey maybe someone can help me, I donloaded the episode via u torrent but cannot seem to be able to view it, any suggestions?

I already stated this both on the New Voyages forum, and on my blog, but I have to say it again: WEAT was amazing.

I've never been shy about offering up my opinion of the NV project. Believe me when I say that I consider WEAT the 80th episode of the original series to be the highest praise I can offer.

Yes, the episode had a few rough spots. Yes, I think Charles Root wasn't the right choice for the part. (Sorry, Charles, but that's my take.) Those are nits. WEAT was Trek, through-and-through.

Thanks, folks.

Well, let me jump in and add my praise for "WEAT." Thankfully, my brother understands these things better than I do, and he was able to download the episode and burn it onto a disc for me. :)

As someone who was asked why I was a fan of New Voyages back in the first episode, I can now point them at "World" and say THIS is why! The dedication and devotion that were obvious from the start have led the cast and crew to set the new standard in "independent productions" (which you and I would call "fan films").

I understand Sulu's character better now that I did after watching Classic Trek. After enjoying the "new" Chekov's performance in the last episode, I have to say I was just as impressed with the "new" Sulu. Not only did he get the helmsman's mannerisms and speech patterns right, but he blended with the rest of the cast as well.

The directing was awesome as well. Moody lighting reminiscent of the early Classic Trek episodes, and nifty camera angles added to the usual great costumes, music, CGI and props.

I really don't want to give too much away since so many haven't seen it yet, but the scene that could have easily bombed but grabbed me and wouldn't let go was the big Sulu-Spock mindmeld. I knew Takei understood what to do, but I had to sit back in awe on Jeffery Quinn's work as Spock. Will someone please tell me why he's leaving after such a great run?

Did anyone else get a real kick out of Majel being back as the computer voice? And I hope we see the actress who played Arianna in other stuff soon. Her job wasn't easy, either, and she did a tremendous job.

Sorry I'm blanking on the cast members' names. I'm really looking forward to "Blood and Fire" after this!

Let me give this one four thumbs up!

I'm sure the episode will be available as a simple download soon enough.

Wow, I find that very interesting Mallory. Both the company I used to work for and the company I work for now use torrent programs to distribute software patches to their different resident sites. I guess a lot of companies are just getting scared of it simply because of what it can be used for.

Jeff Quinn couldn't make the shoot for Blood and Fire because of work conflicts (real life getting in the way), so Ben Tolbin stepped in at the last minute.

My understanding is that as yet no decision has been made on who will play Spock going forward.

I too hope that Jeff will be back as I think he's excellent in the role, but at the same time I'm looking forward to see Ben's interpretation of the character.

NOw that my Torrent education is complete I've been able to watch the finished product.

I don't know what I can say that hasn't already been said.

James, you and your crew have accomplished something truly remarkable. I must admit I wasn't sold on the story line coming in, but it was one of the finest productions built around the Trek mythos that I've ever seen.

I haven't been so moved by TV drama since B-5's "Sleeping in Light".

I really like the idea of calling these shows "independent productions". I consider the term "Fan Film" an honorable one, but really the quality of this production is truly a cut above anything of the fan film genre that I've seen so far.

Bravo and congratulations.

I'm sure that the potential abuse does scare some companies, but I know mine is far more terrified of MicroSoft. You don't want to be an MS distributer and get caught with some things that MS doesn't approve of (like any browser besides IE).

I'm far enough up in management that I can get away with saying I have a copy of FireFox for evaluation purposes, but I'm real reluctant to push it too far. After seeing a couple people fired (one for Napster way back when) I get nervous.

But this is a topic for a different forum (like S&T).

I just tried to watch it an hour ago but apparently for some reason it won't play on WMP for some reason. Is there still problems? Plus there was only a small verison being offered.

My computer has finally finished turning this into a DVD and now I just need to sit back have a drink and enjoy.

What version did you get? I have only seen 2 available, I believe the mp4 is the one in the torrent right now.

.mp4 - You need to use quicktime to play this not WMP.

Download Quicktime 7.2 here: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

.flv - This is flash video and only can't be played on WMP or Quicktime you need VLC or Riva's free player.

Download vlc player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Download Riva's free player: http://www.download.com/Riva-FLV-Player/3000-2194-10435953.html

The MP4 version should also play with a DVD player application, at least it did on my computer. My comp is way to slow for quicktime but WEAT played just fine using the DVD player app.

Now, on to the episode...This is by far New Voyages' best episode yet. I enjoyed it from start to finish. The NV regulars are all getting better, and the guest stars all shined in their roles.

John Lim as Sulu does a great job. If you haven't seen it, I recommend watching "Center Seat" which is a NV Vingette and a Sulu story.

I loved it when George Takei as Sulu asked Spock ...
"Shouldn't you send me flowers and candy first," before Spock performed a mind meld on him.
 For me this was a laugh out loud moment and it also added great depth to the Sulu character, showing his humor, even in a dire situation. I wonder if that line was scripted or an ad-lib?

In all likelyhood, if this had been a TOS script, Shatner would have insited that Kirk would have had the transporter accident so that the focus would have been entirely on him and Takei would have been totally out of the episode except for saying "aye sir."

It was meant to be a Star Trek Phase II script, so if not for Star Wars pushing Star Trek onto the big screen we might have found out! I think Shatner might have been OK with it because Kirk does get a lot of scenes with the girl. It was also possible Shatner would be away for other projects (Decker was created to allow for Shatner to not commit as much time) and the story could have been done when Shatner was off or only working a few days of the shoot. This fantastic episode was destined to be made one way or the other!
