Wow I just watched Blood and Fire part 1. That raised the bar. This story is very enthralling. It was vaguely reminiscent of Aliens towards the end. I was literally on the edge of my seat. These days I am numb to horror flicks and their scare tactics. So I was surprised at how much it affected me watching the blood worms.
Great effects and photography again. The set looks more realistic with the dimmer lighting. I did miss some of the cast from the World Enough and Time episode. But the new actors gave good performances.
I have many gay friends and I've seen all sorts of goings on so nothing shocks me anymore. So I was especially interested in the gay love story. It had been dealt with sensitively and realistically. We had the TNG episode The Outcast which attempted this to some degree and I think that worked quite well.
However Blood and Fire has tackled this controversial subject in a sympathetic way and also quite cleverly doesn't make it feel like a big issue. The crew just accept it as a just and modern Utopian society should. At first when Peter Kirk's lover lies on top of him I was thinking oh no this is going to be Queer as Folk in space (thats an english program from late 90s also adapted for US tv, that was highly controversial and had OTT explicit sex scenes that even a lot of the gay community were unhappy at being portrayed on TV). Thankfully in Blood and Fire it wasn't in your face shock tactics - "Oh look we did a gay scene- aren't we hip"
Its a shame that mainstream TV wasn't given this script. Audiences today are ready to explore these stories. I just can't believe that it's a two parter and we can't see the second part yet. Thats cruel! I just hope this doesn't turn into a gay tragedy like so many other gay films have.
Well done to the cast and crew yet again on this amazing piece of art that expands the minds and universe of Star Trek
