New uniform

Given the thickness of the uniforms that Scotty and Spock seem to be wearing, I'm inclined to think of it as either a weather specific uniform, or a layer for under another jacket.

But, it does have ranking on it, which I find interesting.

Well I hope they're just a dress uniform variant. I thought the last two movies ship uniforms, with the tiny chevrons, were pretty cool and a nice update of TOS costumes.

I am hoping for the same thing. The high collars are reminiscent of the TOS dress uniforms but I don't think high collars are really good for exploring because they just can't be as comfortable as low collars. Also a high collar tends to make people look more stuffy(imo anyway). When they went with the high collars on TNG everyone looked a bit older in some ways and the collars actually made some cast members look a bit chunkier in the face. It may have just been a optical illusion with the collars though because the only cast member to really gain a appreciable amount of weight was Johnathan Frakes. But I do hope they keep the standard non dress uniforms we have seen in the last 2 movies because I actually like the design. They are light and functional for bridge duty. The alternate uniform that has been shown looks kind of thick so it may be, as some have said, a weather variant version.

Why would Scotty be wearing a dress uniform while digging through a crashed ship?

I too hope it's just a dress uniform variation or something but I think some people (including me) will be disappointed to find out that the stiff uniform is indeed the new duty uniform...

I speculated that Spock and Scotty were attending a formal event on a ship that crashed and required rescuing by Kirk and Chekov, who are wearing landing party equipment.

^^^ Good an explanation as any I've heard about it so far. It fits, even if the uniforms don't appear to. :D

As long as I don't see any more late-60's-era Dodge Chargers get smashed. I love those cars and it seems to have been quote in-vogue for various movies in the last decade to kill that particular model of vehicle. They're not getting any less rare, either... :(

Same here. I think that a 2009 Corvette would have been better for that scene, and as I said before, a 2009 Corvette would be an antique in 2358.

I hope you are correct. :techman:
(Mainly because I'm trying to fit into my Spock 2009 costume for Halloween this year and don't want to buy another costume!)

Eh, I would still stick with the 2009 costume, even if it changes. It just looked so good, save for the boots.

Maybe a hybrid ;)

I'm sticking with the 2009, too. The way I see it, it's valid until next Halloween because STB isn't out, yet. Besides, we haven't seen a leak of the command uniform yet, so it may be the same (doubting it, though).

To that end, how cool would if be if Kirk wears a variant of TOS Kirk's alternate uniform?

Of course, retro, or "throw back" looks are always good, so I could drag out my TOS command tunic for this Halloween, too.

One wonders if all the different flavors of uniforms were designed to increase background variety for the film's environment, or to increase potential sales in action figure combinations.

I wish they would just stick to one style ,during kirks 5 yr mission but as a new director comes in things change and not for the best

TOS may have had one style for the main characters (save for Kirk's wraparound and McCoy's surgical smock) but there were several variants for background Starfleet personnel, and that only increased in the films, when budgets allowed for it.

I actually like the changes, and am curious to what it indicates in Starfleet.
