new TREK/Ship idea

Kubwulf and I have been talking about this in length in private. I think we have a great idea. A new STAR TREK show, based on a ship, but that DOES NOT focus on the officers. One of TNG's highest rated episodes from its final two seasons was Lower Decks...

Now, incase you didn't know, there are way more people in the military, heck even in starfleet, who are 'Lower Deck' type people. We think a Star Trek show that was focused on the ordinary lives of people who were not superhero officers would appeal to many more people.

Sure, it might lower the scope of the show, but so what? It would be more 'watchable' for fans I think...and would provide better character development....but the best part? it sounds different. And heck, would inspire the writers, we hope, to come up with more than the 'living plasma cloud' 'run-amok god like creatures' we have encountered before

Your first idea that is even remotely doable. It would be good for trekkies, but I think a lot of people on the outside might wonder about why it isn't focused on the captain and what not. It would be worth making a pilot and seeing viewer reaction, thats for sure.

I was in the navy for many years. And when I first started I had little if any contact with the captains who commanded the carriers I was on.

But thanks for your positive vote....I knew with help I could come up with something that might attract some fans...can it get past mr. Biggles? hard to say..

Bad idea.

Very bad idea.

You can't focus an entire series on low ranking personnel who have no real control over the events that transpire in the show.

I think the show could work very well. For example, in many many war films the movies tell the story about the enlistedmen who are actual doing the fighting. I'm sure that in the hands of good writers, new creative stories can be told that focus on crewmen and petty officers who serve aboard the ship. Maybe even tell the story of a crewman, beginning with starfleeft bootcamp and moving on into his or her first assignment.

I think a show about normal people would work, if done right. Part of the problem with later treks is that they seem like superheroes...I think a show about lower deck folks carrying out the orders of the higher ups is far more identifable than just another show with a super captain and his super command crew...

Rob

Or you could just write your heroic leads with the same human faults and foibles that the TOS crew had. If you took the TNG/VOY-era writers who you fault for writing the lead characters as "too perfect," and told them to write a show about a bunch of ensigns and crewmen, don't you think they'd turn out just as perfect as the high-ranking characters? It's the way the writers devise and write for the characters that needs to be changed, not the characters themselves.

While I agree, there is something to be said about writing a story about people who are just starting their carrier compared to one about Commanders and Captains who have had several years worth of experience. While everyone is human and everyone makes mistakes, those on the command staff do have the experience that lower enlisted and junior officers lack.

Like someone said, this is the first remotely doable idea Scorpio has given us so far. And, yet, I remain unconvinced.

Pitch it to me. Give me ten brief episode synopses for this show to demonstrate that this can work on a weekly basis, and I could yet be convinced.

Okay..here is a quick attempt...

ep 1
(idealy this show woud be on a rotating wheel with another show. Meaning, it is on not every week, but every other week..two episodes a month, each episode two hours long for a total of 10, 2 hour episodes)

We are introduced to five (principle stars of the show) roomates who, because of their rank, will share a berthing. Any mix of alien-humans would do or gender types. They meet as they are checking aboard the ship. They are different personality types. Some kind of interesting mix so as to create growth and conflict. Second to last scene will be with the five of them with the rest of the crew all gathered in the shuttle bay for welcome aboard speech by the captain..First episode will end, in fact each episode will end, with them in their seperate bunks talking about what ever happened that episode..kind of like how Boston Legal ends each show..a wrap up with some kind of meaning to it.

Ep2
We rotate the episode by showing where they each work. They do not work in the same areas, but through-out the day two of them might meet for lunch, or just in passing. Maybe the ship is ferrying a group of diplomats somewhere. We are told through dialog who they visitors are, but the scope of the show is about our five stars various departments dealing with the current mission. Maybe one of the visitors is murdered, and one of our five might be a security officer who will be our A story of the episode. Mission is completed, bed time comes..time to have our wrap up talk between the five stars until the lights go out..

ep3
One of our principle five is seriouly injured during some accident on an away team. The remaining four are rally around their friend, visiting them in sickbay (where find out more about who they are during oneway dialog with thier fallen comrad)...friend gets better at the end...night time chat...bed time..lights out

ep4
Visiting Admiral is one of our principles estranged mother/father. We learn more about this principle characters family..maybe they are andorian or whatever..but we come to see there is friction. Some attempt by other four to get the parent/and their friend, back together. It works, just a little. Enough to know that the admiral will return again someday. night time chat...bed time...lights out

ep5
ship is attacked by klingon/romulan/borg..doesn't matter who. This episode is shot like an ER episode. Very documentary looking..and raw..and somber as first officer (usually seen as being a hard ass with one our five ) dies and gives an inspiring death scene to said principle character

okay, that is only five..but I have ran out of time...more later perhaps..but my point her is that before any scifi elements come into the show, we establish who these people are and how they handle situations and how as strangers they become, eventually, friends...

"Star Trek: Lower Decks"
An A.G.T. / Endgame-Era Mini-Series By Robert Scorpio

I like the idea. 2379 & Beyond. Set aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise-E, during/after the Reman Incident.

I know I'm going to regret this, but why the hell should the show be on the flagship where we're used to our heroes and some of the lower decks?

It should be on some workhourse ship like the Hood or the Rustbucket going around on missions that don't involve new enemies or unusual space phenomena.

I think one of the "episodes" in this show could involve a first contact and one of the principal lower decks characters seriously mucks it up and his ass is only saved by his friends making some kind of amends.
