New to the boards, but not to DS9

Hi everyone!

I've lurked here for years and finally decided to come out of the shadows and yes, I'm a Niner.

My Trek journey began back in high school fall of 1992. Before that, I knew of Trek and was a casual fan. My parents had taken me to movies 2 & 3 as a kid. I'd seen selected episodes of TNG. But it was my 10th grade astronomy teacher that really made me a Trekker. I tried out TNG on her suggestion only to hear about something called DS9 starting soon. So I watched the pilot that following January. It was cool. I also watched TNG on and off when I remembered it was on, such is life. Then on March 12, I caught the episode that would make me a Trek fan forever - Data's Day. That weekend I caught up on DS9 and the newest episodes of TNG - Move Along Home and Birthright Pt. 2. The next week repeated with Past Prologue and I never missed an episode of DS9 since.

TNG and DS9 are my favorite Trek shows by far, but over the years of rewatching since I've realized that while Data is my favorite Trek character, DS9 is my favorite Trek show, best emsemble cast on a sci-fi show to date and probably my favorite live action sci-fi show of all time (well maybe tied with Doctor Who, but again I think that's more for the character of the Doctor himself.).

Anyway, that's my how I got into Trek story. Favorite characters would be - Garak (who may be even more awesome than Data, there are days I can't decide), Kira (a strong woman who was a large reason I liked DS9 from day one), Odo (he's just so cool), Worf (my second fave from TNG), Ezri (a Trek character I probably most like in personality except maybe Kes) and Dukat (one of the best villains in sci-fi).

Btw my astronomy teacher never got into DS9, which I found strange, but she did like my big class paper that I did on wormholes.:)

I look forward to chatting with fellow Niners about the best Trek show of all and how after you've seen it, TV let alone sci-fi is never quite the same for you again.

Welcome to the board fellow Niner!:bolian:

As you can tell from my avatar and Location I'm a big fan of the Cardassians and that is because of the complexity of their society and the great characterization.
This is also true of the whole series, great plots and characters driving the story, heck they even make the Klingons look okay;)

It truly is the king of Star Trek (in my own personal estimation of course)

I think it's cool that you like some of the characters for the same reasons as I do. I don't watch much television, but DS9 is unquestionably my favorite TV show, of the TV that I have watched over the years. I've always considered myself a fan of TNG after I started watching it, but DS9 was just amazing. Both shows I think hit a stride in their third season and it's from there-on that you really see the best of them. I love TNG, but when DS9 peaks, it's hard to get close to it. I am a huge fan of Data myself, tho.

In any case, welcome to the forums, Spot.

:techman: Spot on (bad pun, sorry)! I finished watching DS9 not so long ago, and I while I still love TOS and TNG and still enjoy watching them, they just don't compare to DS9. DS9 seems so much more "real" in terms of character interaction. It's not like a ship full of happy people flying to a different planet every week, all getting along like they're the best of friends, the good guys on DS9 all come from different backgrounds and the inherent conflict and interaction is what sets DS9 leagues ahead of TOS and TNG. Not to mention the large cast of recurring characters and villains that gives the show a level of consistency miles ahead of aforementioned shows.
