New Sony PSP Revealed

Maybe, but the DSi is sweeter!:techman:

I can at least see the appeal of a slimmer PSP with internal storage, I don't know why I'd want a camera on a DS. Wrecks the lines too.
The DSi has more than that. It essentialy includes all of the functions that the PSP had when it first launched, things like actual wi-fi and MP3 player functionality

I'm almost certain the standard DS has Wi-Fi, I recall playing Mario Kart online on mine.

I'm not particularly impressed with either new model. I was hoping for DS2/PSP2 announcements. Not that I'd actually buy them.

It does have wi-fi, but not actual wi-fi :p By which I mean you can actualy go online with the DSi's first party web browser and the DSi supports WPA so you can get into a password protected router and use the internet

I should also clarify that while I said it can play MP3s, it actually cant but it can play M3U, AAC, and MP4

I am not at all impressed. I have a PSP-1000 and I would take it any day over this new PSP-Go. First of all, I already have an 8 GB MagicGate Memory stick, so 16 GB storage doesn't really entice me. Secondly, I can easily change out my battery and get a new one (this one appears to be internal). Thirdly, I can watch UMD movies on it, and make MP4 compatible movies to watch on it anyway via my computer. I can already download games (and have done so) off the PSP Network. In other words, it does nothing my PSP doesn't already do, except it's more limited than my current PSP-1000. Oh, and yes, it is ugly as sin.

Frankly I think I'm the only one who hates updates.

The GBA I still think is a better designed than the tiny to hold GBA SP. The DS Lite is better than than the DSi (I ignore the DS Phat, that was just rushed BS), and the this seems the same with the PSP.

I don't mind the lack of UMD drive (these days I buy most of my PC games through Steam so I'm okay with digital distribution), though I wonder if Sony will have some sort of trade in program that gives you a download of your UMD games.

You've hit on what I don't like about this. Maybe I'm a very unusual gamer in that I rarely keep my games. I beat them and rarely play through them again, so unless it's a great multiplayer title like Call of Duty, I sell/trade them right away once I've beat them. Can't do that with digital distribution.

But if the intital purchase price is a lot lower than an UMD game, then that could offset that problem.

Plus no second analog stick? WTF?

Curious what people plan on controlling with a second analog stick. Don't get me wrong I would have loved one as well, but only if it was included in the original design. This isn't a PSP2, so all PSP games released have to be controller compatible.

Also, I'm glad they ditched UMD. As a PSP 1000 owner, I might upgrade to this at some point (perhaps after it gets a revision as my 1000 still works just fine).

That said, it isn't the best looking device ever.

EDIT: Best not to try comparing DS/PSP functionality, they're worlds apart and totally different devices. Like comparing an iPhone and a PSP.

I bought a browser for my DS and surfed the web just fine. So it does have "real" wi-fi.

EDIT TO ADD: They don't appear to sell that browser anymore, but if you go on Ebay and search DS browser, you'll find them. I think maybe it's the Opera browser but don't quote me on that. I just know I had mine with me on vacation and I distinctly recall setting in the Ft Lauderdale airport and using my DS Lite to surf the web.

DS only supported WEP, but yeah, you could by the browser. It also came with a RAM pack as well... but the DSi has that extra memory now.

While definitely the case at one point in time, the gap is beginning to close

What I don't understand is the purpose. If mobility, my PSP-1000 is very mobile. I can put it in my pocket and go anywhere, get bored? Take it out, startup a game, surf the internet, listen to music, watch movies, download games off PSPNet. If size and weight constraints: What does this new PSP-Go have over that? Smaller size? Not by much. Lighter? Not by much, and even if you (general you) think they are, will it justify the price?

The only reason I can think of for the new portable is to lure in new users. Those people who haven't taken the plunge into the PSP yet. As such, it seems sort of like its there to tap into the more casual market who hasn't purchased a PSP yet. What makes it strange though is that it seems a bit more complex to use than the standard PSP since you need to DL the games from the PSP store rather than just going to the store to buy the game. I would imagine that most casual gamers just get a copy from the store rather than DL games but maybe sony knows something I don't.

Well, the iPhone has proven that games can sell that way. Well, at least 99 cent games or whatever.

The other thing is that PSP games just don't sell that well. One thing that is rumoured to coincide with the PSP Go is a cable-like GameTap subscription service. You pay a monthly fee for access to the entire PSP library.

Well you beat me to the point. After thinking about this thing over night, I just couldn't come up with what would be the selling point for this. Onboard memory? Ok, that's something but I already can get that in the form of a memory stick. As I mentioned earlier, the big WTF moment for me was still not including a second analog stick. A co-worker said they did that as to not leave out existing PSP games. And again I'm like WTF? If they're leaving out the UMD drive, doesn't that leave out existing PSP games?

As whether it's ugly or not, I actually don't really see it as ugly, but I don't really care either. I'm just struggling to see the point of this particular incarnation of the PSP.

Well that's just it. 0.99 cent games (which suck by the way.) If they do that, then maybe I could see myself being interested in "disc-less" content. No way in hell am I'm paying $20-40 bucks for downloaded game that I can't ever sell or trade.

And that just sucks, I never liked the idea of paying as much or even slightly less for the digital content as you would for actual physical media. I mean, at least with physical media it can be re-sold, traded, whatever and you actually have something in hand. With the digital download, you have nothing really. So you got some expensive game content on your unit, okay... so what if the unit dies or is stolen... can you re-download it for free? Can you make a backup? On one hand yeah its very nice, not having to worry about a piece of physical media - losing it, it not working, load times, and even with MP3s and such I get off of iTunes or other sources, I usually make a backup on a cd or memory stick so at least I have it SOMEWHERE ELSE.

I got a feeling this platform will not really sell that well, unless its cheap enough that a 'normal' PSP user would maybe consider it a good option for linking up with a friend or as a backup unit, but I doubt it will be cheaper than a regular PSP, so what's the point, its got a sliding screen... whoopee. I guess it might be good for a traveler or something, so that you can have a library of games and content with you, without having to have UMDs with you that could get lost or damaged, but you can still rip them anyway. So I dunno...

I was considering a PSP eventually, not that I play tons of games, but I thought it would be a nice thing instead of having my little Sansa Fuze and a PDA to play with on a trip or mess around with on a break.
