New Sony PSP Revealed

Hah, whoops. Although I guess the cat was out of the bag a long time ago.

Like the first comment says though, without a second analog stick this device is kind of pointless. They also haven't really solved my biggest issue with the device - the fact that the screen is going to be a scratch magnet. My PSP never leaves the home because it's a pain to carry it around and I can't imagine this will be any better.

I guess the biggest sea change would be the fact that all PSP games will probably be digital only in the near future. I wonder what this means for retailers? I suppose it's like the iPod argument, where they sell a device that purposely steals CD sales away from them... but oh well.

I'm not a fortune teller but my guess is that this answer to the DSi* is going to fall flat on its face and be sent to the great scrap heap in the sky. I can't see why someone would want to sacrifice their UMD functionality, if only because it gives them more flexibility. The lack of a second stick. The only real advantage I can see is the 16 gig memory, something which can be purchased separately.

Combine that with its absolutely hideous looks and it seems like a loser to me

*and yes, this is an assumption on my part :p

Whoa, I didn't even see that... they got RID of a thumbstick? Bah. :p

Although, I can't say I'd miss UMD. I'm the guy who rips my UMDs to the stick anyway, just to save the load times.

Hrm, yeah I looked at some pics in a NeoGAF thread. I probably misread clint's post.

You know, one way to fix the nub thing for FPS games would be to just move the single nub to the other side of the controller... then at least you can fake dual analog controls, since aiming is more important than moving anyway.

Ah well.

I wonder if the thought is that this is meant to compete with an iPod Touch or Zune HD as a multimedia device rather than a game device. In which case... I wonder if they should keep the PSP branding at all?

Actually I should correct myself, it doesn't have a second stick

Still ugly though lol

Its possible but it would be weird since Sony is about to release a "multimedia monster" soon called the "Idou" It would almost be like theyre competing with themselves

I can't disagree on that, it is an ugly piece of shit. I can't say I'd buy it even if it was the best looking gadget on the market though.

There was the rumour that SCEW or whatever wouldn't license the PSP name to Sony Ericsson... so I guess they're still autonomous enough that they need to compete with each other.

I suppose between the two the PSP Go looks better at least... but then again, it's not a phone.

That looks like an ergonomic NIGHTMARE. I can't even play the original PSP for extended periods because my hands cramp up after about 30 minutes. I can't see this update being much more comfortable either--just look at how you have to hold it for gaming.

The fact that it doesn't play UMD games is also going to lead to nothing but confusion among the casuals. Have we ever seen a system update that did something this radical (dropping the system's primary way to play games in favor of downloads only) mid-stream like this?

I don't believe there has. I think Sony's justification for it lies in that the PSP Go (stupid name, by the way) is supposed to compliment the PSP in retail. They're going to be sold side-by-side.

I'm not sure what Sony was thinking when they designed the PSP Go, I think it looks pretty ugly. The lack of a second analog stick is also pretty disapointing.

I don't mind the lack of UMD drive (these days I buy most of my PC games through Steam so I'm okay with digital distribution), though I wonder if Sony will have some sort of trade in program that gives you a download of your UMD games.

I'm also interested in seeing the specs of the PSP Go, it's possible that it will be more powerful then the base system (like the DSi is more powerful then the DS) and we'll see PSP Go enhanced and PSP Go only games.

Why is it so hard to put a second analog stick on the PSP? if they could just do that, the sells for the psp would be alot better then they are now.

It's a more interesting update than the DSi at any rate.
Maybe, but the DSi is sweeter!:techman:

I can at least see the appeal of a slimmer PSP with internal storage, I don't know why I'd want a camera on a DS. Wrecks the lines too.
The DSi has more than that. It essentialy includes all of the functions that the PSP had when it first launched, things like actual wi-fi and MP3 player functionality
