New Ships Revealed!

Lovely shot, glad we get to see more starfleet ships and a starbase actually looks BUSY for a change!

Nice to see at least another Enterprise - type of ship too. Not going to call it a Connie class because I don't know if that applies any longer.

Surely that might just be the Enterprise?

I would think that it is - as a rule of thumb you never put another of the same class of ship onscreen with the Hero ship - the audience will have trouble telling which is which.

And don't call me Shirley.

The Station reminds me of Franz Joseph's "Star Fleet HQ" from the old Tech Manual

Same here. The details are significantly different, but the overall feel is pleasingly similar.

I could complete that line and actually agree with the assessment, because it really does feel like they just slapped shit together for these ships. It's like their version of the Frankenfleet.

They are no worse then the FJ designs.

Beautiful shot though. I wonder if we are looking out of a shuttle window, with the way the reflections are and the slight distortion.

Wow, this is cool.

I REALLY like this Spacedock... It's much superior than the big Mushroom.

The best part is that the ships hook to it, and don't have to go inside. :)

I will have no shortage of new ships to build, that's for sure. :)

The station itself is awesome looking IMO. I cant really make a judgment on the ships, although the 2 ships in the lower right hand corner look pretty good to me.

Yikes! I forgot how big that thing was! Over 2km? That is just too much, Franz!

I'd say the FJ one is about 2,600 meters from outer pod-edge to opposite outer pod-edge:

So how big is the movie station? Here it is rotated and given some scale indicators:

st11_station.jpg

The red rectangles show that each pod is roughly two "ship-lengths" wide. The green rectangles show that the entire station is roughly 5.25 pods wide, and thus something like 10.5 "ship-lengths" wide.

So what's a ship length?

Given their nacelle placements, the two ships in the red rectangles seem(?) to be a bit shorter than the Enterprise. Assuming a 289 meter Enterprise length (based on TOS-related drawings), these are maybe 200-250 meters long.

If "ship-length" = 200 meters, the station would be about 2,100 meters wide. If 250 meters, the station would be about 2,625 meters. Those are rough estimates, with lots of assumptions, but they should give some idea.

I hope we are given class names for these ships later on similar to what happened with First Contact and all of the new starship appearances in the opening.

Is this just a starbase or is this the Starfleet Museum? I know it probably says somewhere, but I'm too tired/lazy to look it up.

I'm wondering how much these ships owe their design aesthetic to ENT the series, as opposed to sticking with TOS-inspired designs. In hindsight, I suppose if ENT were to continue, their ships would eventually morph into these designs, seeing as how it's the most recent Trek and Eaves is the only link between ENT and XI. ENT design elements included more of a steampunk yet sleek feel, more mechanical but overall brighter interiors than many of its predecessor shows.

Is that the Enterprise on the far right of the station docked?

I LOVE the look of the station!

I love how trekkies have gotten so proficient in intelligence work like this.

I mean, to think that the Intelligence agencies of the US train people for years in Image analysis and such, so they can tell the type of ship, tank, airplane in a grainy photo...

And trekkies do it as a hobby. Something about that always gives me a chuckle. :techman:

It's not identified as anything specific. The image accompanies a brief dossier page about the Federation; have a look at it in the TrekMovie article.

Does anyone else get a 2001: A Space Odyssey feel from that pic?
When I saw it, it reminded me of this poster.
While whoever designed the station would almost certainly have been aware of the 50s and 60s concept art and science fiction illustrations of which the 2001 poster art you cite is part, and which undoubtedly informed the Franz Joseph Star Trek blueprints, I wasn't reminded of that image in particular. They may both be depictions of space stations, but of two pretty significantly different kinds.

Nice looking station:techman: Though, it does give me a Deathstar vipe, at times.
I like the new ships too.
Its been a long while since we saw new starship desings in a Trek film, so its all good. I just hope we get closer peek at some of them in the film, besides Kelvin and Enterprise i mean:cool:
