New Robin Hood trailer

I'm looking forward to it but I think the original concept for this movie when it was known as Nottingham was better. I'm taking my brother to it.

Yeah, I don't know. That trailer was certainly better than the first one, but I still find myself really uninterested in this movie.

^ That's because Sienna Miller was originally supposed to play Marion when it was Nottingham but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts or something like that. I agree this trailer is much better than the first one at the Superbowl. I should add to that Russell Crowe was going to play the Sherif and Robin Hood would have been younger. The movie would have been told through the Sherif's POV and a love triangle formed between him, Marion, and Robin. For the longest time it was going to be filmed in its original concept but then out of no where Scott changed his mind and decided to make it a traditional Robin Hood movie.

while leading his Merry Men of Sherwood Forest to victory and fairness.
"All right men! To Victory and Kemptness!!"

"Victory and kemptness? What's up with that Robin?"

"Well, I was up late last night, had a hard time writing the inspirational cry. How about "To Victory and Cleanliness!!"

"hmmm.... No."

"Victory and Niceness!!!"

"Getting there... Hey Robin, those pikemen are getting pretty close.."

"Victory and Balanced Budget!!!"

"Robin....."

"Victory and Fairness"

"OK bro, that's it, we got to go. Victory and Fairness!!! Victory and Fairness!!!!"

<everyone> "VICTORY AND FAIRNESS!!!"

<Will takes an arrow through the eyehole> "Hey! You shot Will!! Right through the eyehole!!! Hardly fair, that!!!!"

There's no way it'll top "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938), but I think the best case scenario is that it's more watchable than the Kevin Costner debacle. I just don't like that these newer versions have to be so 'dark'. "King Arthur" was like that too. The 30s version had some serious undertones with the poor people being shown, but at least it was a movie with bright cinematography and costumes and joyful performances. I miss that.

I remember doing a play in school where we had to take a classic literature/ "fairy tale" story (such as Robin Hood or Rumpelstiltskin or Snow White) and give it a modern, inverted twist. So I decided to do Robin Hood but instead focus on Robin Hood as the perceived villain, making the story told from the perspective of King Richard the Lionheart. I called it Hero in the Hood.

Anyway, Ridley Scott's original idea for his version of Robin Hood sounds somewhat similar, and I have to say that I would have been more interested in seeing his original version verses what we're getting, i.e. a more straight-up adaptation, which we've seen countless times before (and yes, I know this is being marketed as an "origin story", but it looks merely like an updated version of the classic story from the trailers).

Meh. It really doesn't look too fascinating... something I'll watch if I remember to when it comes out on DVD...

Apparently Russell wasn't happy with the script when it was still Nottingham and that is when it was decided that it would be re-written into a more traditional take of Robin Hood. I don't mind this but as I've said many a time I was really looking forward to watching the original concept. Russell Crowe would have played Sir Robert who takes the post of Sherif of Nottingham and starts investigating a murder which the crown and Sir Guy believe to be the doing of Robin Hood. He enlists the aide of Lady Marion (who as I've said and the wikipedia article indicates would have been played by Sienna Miller) in an attempt to understand Robin better and a love triangle develops between the three of them. Sir Robert conducts the investigation very much in a CSI style way which mystifies Sir Guy. Robert and Robin eventually make an alliance with each other when its discovered Sir Guy committed the murder (I think that is what happened its been a while since I read the script) and Robert realizes as much as Marion comes to respect him and care for him she's really in love with Robin. There's a wedding at the end and King Richard appears like he normally does. Prince John has a minimal if zero role in Nottingham. I found it really interesting.

I can't say that this trailer has me too excited. I like Gladiator (one of the first DVD's I ever owned), and I am sure this new movie will be good too, it's just that I didn't see anything in this preview that I haven't seen before in other action movies.

I am sure this movie will be compared to Gladiator a lot, and I got a definite Maximus vibe from Russel Crowe's lines. Maybe they should have cast Joaquin Phoenix as the Sheriff of Nottingham, and Connie Nielson as Marion. ;)

Well, to judge by that article, it doesn't sound as if Scott just sort of up and changed his mind about the concept for no reason, or changed the script to suit Russell Crowe. The script was bought on spec by the studio and then Scott ordered rewrites when he was brought on because he didn't like it.

I could be good. I'll take a wait-and-see approach, though.
