NEW ONGOING TREK CROSSOVER SERIES BEGINS OCTOBER 2022

Interesting comment from Lanzing. "This is real Star Trek. This is as close as we can, on the comic side, to being canon. We will be canon until they un-canonize us. But we are working with the shows. We are in communication with the teams... . This is the canonical Benjamin Sisko sequel story".

I appreciate the sentiment, but unless it features the other DS9 characters, particularly Jake, it isn't the return of Sisko that I will take much interest in.

I guess to them it's Canon until contradicted. Like online and the novelverse. The fact they're liaising with the writers room means they're going that extra mile

I guess if they can't get Avery Brooks to return or recast this is the closest we'll get to a Sisko show, like Jean-Luc in Picard and Janeway in Prodigy

Which is mistakenly using "canon" to mean "consistent with canon," which all tie-ins, as a rule, have always been expected to be. All tie-ins have to be approved by the studio, signed off on by the showrunners, and checked for consistency. That has always been the case with licensed Trek fiction and games. The only difference now, as far as I can tell, is that the liaison between the production and the tie-ins is Kirsten Beyer, a member of the shows' writing staffs, rather than someone from the studio licensing department like Paula Block or John Van Citters, or Roddenberry's assistant Richard Arnold back in the late '80s. It's a little more direct, but not fundamentally different from the standard approach.

It practically seems like this story has been "un-canonized" before it's even begun when last week's Lower Decks episode had a throwaway line that mentioned that...

Sisko is still in the wormhole as of 2382 (or 2381, arguably)

Maybe he goes back in at the end of this comic series :P

I just hope that the Bridge of the Theseus isn't just a ENT-E retread, and it's as individual as the ship design itself. In my head, I'm expecting something akin to the Shenzou Bridge, with pit stations and stuff

Whoa.

So... IDW's been reading too many of those "build your crew from any Trek show!" threads?

They did mention when they announced the new "Star Trek" ongoing series, that it was the start of a "bold new direction" or somesuch, so I guess we are seeing more of that now. Sounds like they want to have some big interconnected Star Trek comics universe, so they can have crossovers and event series and whatever. I've never read a superhero comic in my life, but from some things I've picked up from geek spaces online, they apparently do this kind of thing a lot.

I will give this series a try, too. But I'm kind of hoping every future series from them isn't just a "mix random canon characters together" thing. (At least the "Star Trek" series appears to have some newly-created characters in it.)

So, with Lore... another pre-invalidated story from IDW?

Not necessarily. Tie-ins are always approved by the studio people to make sure they're consistent with existing canon or known near-future plans. Contradictions generally only crop up with new canon written after the books or comics are approved and too far along in the process to be altered. Since seasons 2 & 3 of Picard were shot back-to-back, the approval people would've probably already known what was in store for Lore and could've told the comics writers what they could or couldn't do with the character.
