Love Ryan Reynolds but isn't he a bit big and tall for Kirk? Kirk was a fair bit shorter than Spock. I suppose they could put Quinto on a box....

You don't cast because an actor resembles another actor. Casting is more about if the actor can capture the essence of the character.

Ryan Reynolds can pull off young, dashing, quick on his feet Starfleet officer.

Nope.

There are way more talented actors out there than Quinto but his resemblence to Nimoy sealed the deal. There has to be both talent and a visual resemblence for Kirk as well.

Reynolds doesnt work in the visual aspect at all.

Abrams could have decided looks don't matter too much but Quinto getting the role suggests that looks are a big factor, so I expect it to be a big factor for Kirk too. Why for one and not the other?

No, the shape of his face is all wrong. But Ryan Phillippe is the second most Kirk-like guy I've seen so far, second only to Eion Bailey.

I'd rather go with Bailey. Hes proven he can act.

Phillippe is proven he can't. He would be the Hayden Christensen of this franchaise.

Then again, if the rumors of Kirk being in his 20s are true...prequel to his Enterprise days; then Patrick Flueger all the way.

Interesting... Phillipe looks the part, to me, much more than Bailey does. I LOVE Eion Bailey in "Band of Brothers" but his character there was sorta weak, soft-spoken... and I just have a hard time imagining him as Kirk because of that as much as for anything else.

Then again, maybe that's just a sign that he's a good actor... only time will tell!

It was just a role - I'm sure he could play a stronger, more self-assured character. The key thing is that he not only has the looks and the talent but an earnest persona, something that I think Kirk absolutely must have. It's a background quality but vital to the whole mix.

I have over 200 DVDs in my Netflix queue. I'd add more, but I'm afraid I'll break it.

But if he was on Deadwood, I'll take your word for it he's good.

I think Jensen Ackles is the best match on this list... but I'd prefer Kirk be an unknown with some serious talent. (Not to say Ackles doesn't have any...)
