News New Harry Potter Series Announced

It does seem like a modern HP reboot would be a hard sell. Of course, I'd watch it for John Lithgow as Dumbledore alone. But then, I was a hardcore Potterhead.

Why would it be a hard sell? A lot of material from the books never made it into the movies.

The big question here is whether people will get fired up to revisit a story many of them have already read and seen.

Therein lies the big risk of making another adaptation, and why a shift in narrative would likely be preferable. There's such huge potential in the Wizarding world itself that there's no need to reiterate. For instance, we know there are wizarding schools all over the world, yet as far as I know they're never seen other than in Order of the Phoenix when some of them end up visiting Hogwarts via the trials and quidditch games. One approach to a series would be to set different seasons at different wizarding schools and make it an anthology series connected via threads from the wizarding world.

1. Everyone knows the ending now. A lot of the fandom relied on wondering how it would end.
2. The original movies were brilliantly cast, and came out fairly recently.
3. Pottermania has dimmed since then. The Fantastic Beasts franchise didn’t really revive it.
4. Whether you agree with it or not, JK Rowling is a more controversial figure than she was when the books were new.

Not without good reason, though. IIRC, the movie producers started considering making one movie per book as early as Goblet of Fire, which could have greatly increased their profits, but they concluded a lot of the everyday drama and talking that would allow them to retain wouldn't necessarily play well on screen.

John Lithgow confirms he will play Dumbledore in the ‘HARRY POTTER’ series.“It's going to define me for the last chapter of my life... I'll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I've said yes”
John Lithgow is a fantastic actor and no doubt he will do a great job. But I too cannot and will not do anything that will support or benefit JK Rowling.
