New Fuller Interview; Season 1 = 13 (Serialized) Episodes

Collider just posted an interview they did last night on the red carpet at the Saturn Awards with Bryan Fuller where he dropped some new information/facts about the new series:

Among other things he says progressive audiences "should be happy" and alludes to LGBT inclusion.

Says the episode run times and content will be liberated by streaming: 60 minute episodes; can run longer or shorter as needed. Don't expect a lot of profanity, but they can be more "graphic" was his word.

And that around Comic-Con we will get more info. I think that's on the 21st of July, right?
from July 21-24 so any of those dates could be the day we get loads of official info and casting since they start filming in Sept.

Starship setting confirmed (no surprise) - a part of the interview not transcribed speaks to "bridge design" as well as the other comment about looking at racecars for inspiration for the ships.

I love the sound of everything here. Taking the DNA of STAR TREK and modernizing it for today's audiences. I have full confidence in Fuller's ability to produce a great show for the fans.

I'm surprised to hear that they're already this far into production, especially with what sounded like very little casting done as of yet. Also, let it not be underestimated how great it is to have Vincenzo Natali coming on as producing director, his episodes of Hannibal were some of the most beautiful in the series, and that's some achievement in a show as trippy and gorgeous as Hannibal.

Here's a guy who knows his Trek wanting to take things forward

The first day of SDCC is actually the premiere of STAR TREK BEYOND so I'm wondering will they vbe allowed to promote/reveal big news about ST17? I for one absolutely hope so!

Also with 13 eps - if it starts January for 13 weeks it could work pretty much back to back with the new Doctor Who season which seems to be going back to an Easter Saturday premiere?

This is a length that I was expecting, and I'm happy to hear of the serialisation. A series suitable for today!

Mostly sounds good but I'm disappointed with only 13 episodes.

Mr Awe

I think the lack of commercials and longer run-times will more than make up for it. It'll allow them to tell tighter stories with less filler episodes.

I'm pleased with the episode number, I think it'll bring tighter focus to the stories and maybe the characters throughout the season.

Very interesting interview. Its sounding like the new show could be very good. I'm definitely excited for serialization. I like episodic, but we got a lot of that from ST over the years, so doing it a bit different will be interesting.

Well, shit.
I'm not a big fan of overarching story-arcs on Star Trek. They are always about war with aliens, wether they be called "Klingons"; "The Dominion" or "the Xindi". That's rather lame. I'm much more interested in the "exploration(s) of the week", or "the concept of the week". The on-story episodes or two-parters were always the best (Darmok, Duet, Best of both wordls...). But overarching, long conflict with aliens was never that interesting. Star Trek is not Game of Thrones.

The only thing he said that made me less than happy was the comment about looking at race cars for their starship design. Otherwise that all sounds good. Especially the progressive comments and color- and gender-blind comments about casting. That's the ticket.

Okay, just watched the video. I'm a lot more positive now, mainly because of those things:
- he said they aren't bound to the whole four-quadrant-crap (not the Star Trek quadrants, the target audience for blockbusters)
- compareing to TOS and using the words "high concept science fiction" in the same sentence. This guy get's it
- Lamborghinis as inspiration for starhsips. Sorry, Overgeeked, I love it, that's just pandering to me personally:lol:
- for "progressives", and "colourblind" casting. Would be nice to finally see some gays in Star Trek, but I don't want sexuality and relationship drama in the center. Hope they find the right balance there
- in-house vfx because of "cgi augmentation of certain alien species". damn!

Thinks still to worry about:
- the 13 episodes/one story comment. I really, really, REALLY hope that's more an "arc", and not a singular story. Reminds me of when they tried that with Stargate, and the result was Stargate Universe -shudder-
- no word on if we'll see holodecks...

Edit: Also, Bryan Fuller is amazingly adorkable in real life!
