New Frontier book series and New Earth. Anyone else like them?

^Didn't Missing in Action come out a bunch of years ago? I think you may be a bit late on the spoilers request.

I checked and it came out over ten years ago. I wasn't even a Star Trek fan back then!
Yeah...10 years seems like more than long enough to not have to include spoiler captions. Of course, much like @JWolf , i'm not a mod, and that's not my call.

Normally you'd be correct - the rule for spoilers in the TrekLit forum is six months. However, this thread was started by someone who hadn't read New Frontier yet, so a certain amount of extra care should be applied.

New Frontier got me into TrekLit proper, and will always hold a special place in my heart.

I was interested in trying out New Earth but the reviews kept me away...

You should feel pretty comfortable staying away. If you really want to, just read the first one, any random choice from the middle four, and the last one. You will have the complete experience.

Just because a Trek book is at least six months old does not mean every has read it. So spoilers should go in a spoiler tag. I've not read every Trek book. I've read most. So do we really want to spoil Trek books for some just because the books are six months or more old? I feel six months is way too short a time. I've had plenty of cases where I've not yet read the latest books and it's boon over six months. Would I want to have them spoiled just because I didn't read them right away? Not a chance.

So can we please be careful with spoilers? Thanks.

That’s like saying that people should put Spoiler codes on topics discussing Shakespeare’s MacBeth & Hamlet, even though those are over 400 years old!

Really, 6 months is fine for new books. After that, it’s reader beware!

Agree. Whilst I’ve read all TOS and Discovery novels published since the hiatus I’m way behind on the 24th century novels so haven’t yet read Available Light and Collateral Damage.

I'm not opening this argument. We had it before and decided as a forum that 6 months was valid. It's not reasonable to expect everything to be spoiler coded.

I'd have to agree spoiler tagging everything would get tedious because you'd basically have to literally spoiler tag every post that talks about anything in story. I know if I had to put a spoiler tag in everything I posted about Star Trek stories, well, frankly, I'd be posting a lot less than I do now because it would get old fast.

Now I will say I try to avoid giving away any major plot points. Sometimes I'll post reviews on old books I've read and while I talk about things in the plot I usually try to avoid giving away the plot twists (whodunit...that sort of thing). I think as posters we can use a bit of discretion unless it's a specific debate about a particular plot point in a book.

Otherwise I would say, as the Ferengi probably would, let the reader beware. If you see a thread or review about a book you haven't read or series you haven't read yet and you want it all to be fresh and new with no spoilers, then don't go into the thread until after you've read it.

Literary Treks is beginning the New Earth series and we just dropped the first book review!

glad to see that there are some people besides me that enjoy the New Frontier books and the New Earth books

I liked NF a lot, especially the earlier books. I liked the later books too but they lost a bit of the magic. Sort of like season 7 of TNG, lol. I still liked it but it wasn't quite as good as say seasons 3-5.

New Earth was a bit uneven for me. I liked the premise, and I always enjoyed stories that took place between TMP and TWOK. But some of the books in that series were better than others. I did like the two Challenger books (if you include the Gateway novel). For some reason Keller reminded me just a bit of Calhoun from NF. It's a shame that series never continued beyond the Gateway stories.

Given that Challenger was an intentional rejection of everything Starfleet and the Federation stood for, because Diane Carey hated TNG, it's kind of surprising there's as many Challenger books as there are.

I liked New Frontier especially the first several books, but it started to fizzle over time for me and I never read the last several books in the series. I never got into New Earth. I do recall liking the name of that series' main antagonistic species though.

Just picked up The Returned trilogy for 99 cents a piece on the U.S. amazon site. Kindle obviously.
