New Flu Virus SPREADS!

:guffaw::guffaw: I like the last entry the best!

If this is like 1918 at all it could be that this flu winds down soon, and pops back up in the late fall and kills everyone. :)

Yes, it will be just like 1918, and we will suddenly not have invented antiviral medications, steroids and respirators.

Are current antivirals and vaccines effective against the 1918 virus?

Yes. Two types of antiviral drugs, rimantadine (Flumadine) and oseltamivir (Tamiflu), have been shown to be effective against influenza viruses similar to the 1918 virus. Vaccines containing the 1918 HA or other subtype H1 HA proteins were effective in protecting mice against the 1918 virus. In fact, the current influenza vaccine provided some level of protection against the 1918 virus in mice.
From a CDC study undertaken in 2005 to reconstruct the 1918 Swine Flu. And even without effective treatment of any sort the 1918 strain only had a 10% fatality rate, as it is estimated to have infected about 500,000,000 and killed 50,000,000.

Even in 1918, experts point out, the pandemic Spanish flu infected at least 500 million of the world’s 1.5 billion people, killing 50 million. Many of those lives would have been saved if anti-flu drugs, antibiotics and mechanical ventilators had existed.
Source. In other words, 1918 is in no way a comparable situation. :bolian:

I was thinking more along the lines of finding them in person and coughing on them, but perhaps if I found a way to cough on people over the internet..

You know why I never gave a toss about Bird Flu and this? The word "flu"

Flu is something when you might have 1-3 days sick off work max, feel a bit shit, maybe be sick once or twice, a bit of a fever, stay in bed all day, watching trash daytime TV until you recover, then feel totally fine afterwards.

Wow, I'm so scared!

Now if it were Bird flesh-eating-gonna-come-and-fuck-you-up-like-that-Season-2-X-Files-episode-"F. Emasculata"-virus... then maybe I'd be concerned

An excellent piece on the story-

DON'T PANIC BUT YOU ARE GOING TO DIE

PEOPLE across the world were last night urged not to panic as experts warned that most of you would be dead by the end of this sentence.
Professor Henry Brubaker, of the Institute for Studies, said: "There's nothing to worry about but this is definitely worse than four simultaneous nuclear wars and a dinosaur invasion."

Someone tried to call in sick today with "wine flu" after downing a bottle of Chianti last night. :D

Top punning effort, I thought.

Maybe you've never had the flu, just some lesser viral infection.

With flu you are bedridden for at least a week, and attempting to get up will bring on severe dizziness and nausea, which coupled with a progressive physical and mental weakness, you just can't tolerate being up. Food doesn't stay down either. Expect to lose a stone in weight. You will struggle to sleep and have a temperature, which will make you feel exhausted and as irritable as hell, and will likely reduce you to tears before the week is out. Antibiotics will typically be prescribed because of your susceptibility to bacterial infections. And it will typically take a month before you feel right again. And that's for a healthy person in their prime. For a weaker person it can feel like death.

I've had all those symptoms, numerous times in my life. I think the longest period was about 5 days in late 2007.
Yes you feel like shit, but it's not like you're gonna die, you know you're gonna get better, it's just a question of when. No point in going to the Doctor or anything. Last time I was ill it was just boring, as I was simply waiting for it to be over with. Think I was sick about 12 times in one day, but I wasn't worried, it'll pass

Maybe I'm just super human with my amazing immune system :)

Well, that's the point. This particular virus is just different enough that it will encounter reduced resistance from most peoples' immune systems.

Maybe :)

I've also had these symptoms with viral infections. But I also had the flu once about 3-4 years ago, and it was an order of magnitude more severe than anything before or since.

Call me jaded, call me skeptical--and blame the media!--but *every* summer for the last few years there's been a new thing that has the potential to kill us all and to end the world.

Y2K. SARS. Mosquito virus. Bird flu. Bird flu, part deux. Pig flu...

I'm sure it is serious, and I'm not a complete unfeeling monster.... but does anyone else feel as I do, that we're just being spoon-fed fear extract by the media?
