New Fan Film Series, Star Trek: New Era

Star Trek New Era

Ensign
Red Shirt
Hello,

Our goal is to create and produce a new fan film series based on a missing chapter in Star Trek’s history, Kirk’s 2nd 5 year mission aboard the newly refitted USS Enterprise. This series takes place directly after the events shown in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and lead up to the events shown in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Haven’t you ever wondered how V’Ger’s near destruction of Earth had impacted Starfleet, the Federation and the Alpha Quadrant? What about the Klingon Empire? Having ships destroyed so easily by a probe originally sent out by Humans? How would they re-act? Are there any organizations in the galaxy that want to take advantage of the just passed crisis? Well now’s your chance to finally see the real story!

We are a completely non-profit organization that just loves Star Trek and need your help to make this dream a reality.

In the tradition of Star Trek Fan Film Series such as Star Trek: New Voyages and Star Trek Continues, we’ve created an indiegogo funding campaign for initial startup fees, equipment, advertising and marketing, rental space etc. There’s a lot to do! We need to build our sets which include the Bridge, Engineering, The Crews Quarters, and Sickbay etc. ALL from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Also we need props and costumes!

Your contribution will not only make a dream a reality, but will finally take a new step in the Star Trek lore that already exists, giving everyone a look in to an untold story that really needs to be told. It’s our intention to bridge the gap between the first 2 Star Trek movies and give fans an excellent and meticulous look into the inner workings of the Star Trek universe at that time!

We have great people onboard and more people joining this great project every day! And every dollar given is much appreciated! Help us get the word out and about this fan film series and let the human adventure continue! Thank you!

Oh look another reel of generic special effects and a plea for everyone to open their wallets from someone who lists no experience or credentials. The nerve.

Honestly, it's offputting when people join this BBS just to ask for money without being part of our community. No thanks.

Well everyone has to start somewhere, though ragging on something without knowing much about it kind of makes you look like you're just trolling....

If you have specific questions were happy to answer all you have to do is ask!

But this is a project were trying to start that is close to our hearts! If you don't want to contribute, that's your choice and your right! We respect that but try giving a little respect back yourself! We have many talented people involved with varying degrees of talent and credentials! Would you like them all typed out? Or just the top 50?

The response we've gotten so far has been very positive with a lot of people offering to help and genuinely excited for this project! So if that's not you, then c'est la vie and take care!

What I wrote doesn't come close to "trolling" by the standards of this board. I was merely expressing my opinion about drive-by crowdfunding posts like this, which we see all the time.

I'd point you to the board rules on this matter but the BBS just recently got moved to a new platform and I don't think all those documents are online (or at least where I have been able to locate them).

Well this is not a "drive by crowdfunding!" The fact I'm actually responding to you shows I actually care about what people say and think when it comes to this project! This is a true endeavour from our hearts and I hope in time you'll come to see that!

We have seen one too many people who commit drive by crowdfunding. Join only to promote their project and kickstarter. Then vanish once people drop a dime or two into the project. Only to reappear to give the occasional update or when they need more dough. They don't participate in the discussions or the community at large.

If this is to be a series, then I would suggest coming up with a few scripts to show your vision for the characters and universe setting, to prove your professionalism. At least some show outlines, or a show Bible.

Well I know for one I've read a lot of the posts here over the years, but I'm more of a face to face trek talker, and with with this project a long with work I'm a very guy... Though if you want me to be involved I'm more then happy to be!

I've supported 30+ Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaigns (not many of them related to film) but I've been burned a few times giving funds to the wrong project. At a minimum, I need to see the face of the person asking for funds, and some information about who is in front and behind the camera. If it's all amateurs, that's fine, but I need to know who I'm funding. The CGI looks fine but that's only one piece of a successful crowdfunding effort, and not one of the most important pieces in my view.

Not to be the nitpicky asshole, but okay, here i go.

I am bothered by the fact that you invoke the name of NV and STC in defending your fundraising, even though both of those outfits produced complete episode(s) out of their own pocket, and built the initial sets, all before they ever asked for cash. They proved what they were capable of, which is a much different thing from really really wanting to.

I am also already turned off by the episode descriptions, because of the use of terms like Alpha Quadrant, Away Team, and god, Section 31.... these are all ideas and terms that should be kept far, *far* away from a long awaited TMP style 5YM on the refit Enterprise.

Hello and welcome. I would like to point out that neither of the series you mention used crowdfunding to start up, and had a body of work (and their sets) in place long before they even considered crowdfunding.

You might get a better response if you share some of your own past work, or that of the others who are involved with your project.

I don't see anything that tells me who these people are, what experience they have, where they're located, nothing that indicates accountability in case things go south.

What I do see is the phrase "non-profit organization" with no evidence to back it up, comparisons to STNV & STC, the words "marketing" and "advertising," and a shot for shot copy of the TMP Enterprise leaving drydock.

We are a completely non-profit organization that just loves Star Trek and need your help to make this dream a reality.

In light of recent events concerning Lord Voldemort, sorry.

I'll check out your web site later, but I must point out that coming on the heels of what's going on with CBS / Axanar, you're pretty bold to start a crowd-source fan-fic Trek movie project. Assuming that you do get support from the community and move forward, please do educate yourself on what Axanar did right and more importantly what they did so very wrong.

This is a brilliant idea and a series that I have long wanted to see/be involved in but i agree with a number of posts here that the time may not be right to crowd fund this specially while CBS are suing another production. I also agree that NV-Phase II & Continues put episodes out without asking for funds thereby proving what they could do. It may be that you do not have funds for an episode but perhaps you should be tring to build sets and the crowd fund.(even part sets) I also have concerns about the use of "trek" items such as section 31 that just did not exist in the TMP period. All of this is holding me back from backing you.
Perhaps you should look at all the comments here and re-evaluate you plans so that the people who may back you are more comfortable doing so. I dont want to discourage you as I have long hope this idea would appear as a post TMP period fan film is full of possibilities

Thanks everyone for your feedback and messages of encouragement and critiques, and here is our response...

First, could someone explain in a nutshell this Lord Voldemort thing?

2nd, We're well versed in what happened and IS happening with Axanar! We dont intend to make the same mistakes, or what is view as the same mistakes by Paramount/ CBS.

3rd, According to Cannon, Section 31 DID exist since the birth of the Federation. Our stories, which are a sweeping Arc of events to fill the gap between the loving exploration Starfleet before V'ger, and the more militaristic feel we see in the Wrath of Khan. And reading too much into words and phrases like Alpha Quadrant seems a bit petty. I think to base you support of a project on a few words is not very Star Trek... Just because we havent heard them in the Original Series doesnt mean they dont exist or wont flow naturally from the story...

4th, We are just starting out... Things will grow and change, and we really DO appreciate ALL comments! Trust me it's not easy to sit here and hear how people think our project will fail because of a couple words or ideas. But we understand you're all speaking from a love of Trek like we are! So Thank you!

5th, Originally, we were going to try to put this on by ourselves. But unfortunately the costs involved are staggering and so we asked for help! If you cant, or dont want to help out, that's also fine, we understand. But we believe we have a solid idea and direction for this fan film series that deserves support!

6th, As for the people involved and our backgrounds, that's coming! We launched this early so we could get a head start on this project. SO the entire cast and crew have not been chosen yet, though when we have everything cemented in it will be revealed. Plus we will be giving updates on our facebook and twitter as we progress on this front. We also did it this way to get the community involved. We WANT Star Trek fans to work on this and showcase their talents with us! We want to make this a truly fan based project! And we're happy to consider Anyone and Everyone for different positions with us!

Lastly, AGAIN we're just starting out. We're trying to give this dream of ours some light. Unfortunately we cant do that without peoples help and backing. So we've put ourselves out there and praying for a successful campaign to make this dream a reality. Hopefully it does become one and that you'll ALL be impressed with the results.

Thank you!

Welcome to the forum. Your emphasis for your crowd funding campaign is weighted to much on your idea for your series rather than who is behind it. As a startup, people want to see who is behind the project. In the beginning it is more about investing in you and your team, rather than just your idea. People will not donate to someone behind the scenes because it screams of a scam. If you saw a campaign like yours on Indiegogo, would you just donate to it? Another mistake is your asking for too much money on your first campaign. Your goal need to be much lower as a startup.

I have been involved with 3 very successful crowd funding campaigns and I can tell you what works and what does not. Right now you would be lucky to make 1k, let alone 150k. I understand you have a dream to make this all happen, but it needs to planned correctly, and realistically. We are not trying to be negative, but many of here have seen these type of campaigns come and go.

Good luck, and don't give if this does not work the first time.

Thank you, and no we don't intend on giving up! And as I said we WILL be revealing our team shortly were just getting our "phasers in a row" so to speak :p. And yes I've given funding to projects like ours, guess for me it depended on how interested I was in the project!
