You know I wasn't remotely interested in this whole debate but this attitude is seriously beginning to get up my nose. What you're saying is half of the acting professionals in the UK, no matter how consummate their performing skill, will be unable to perform in this role because of their gender.

Well it looks like Capaldi is the 13th regeneration (i.e. 13th life), with the previously unknown Hurt Doctor slotting in at some point.
They could either play it for drama, or just through it off with one line, it was only a couple of lines in the first place.

A female Doctor would've been brilliant, but Moffat has to leave before it happens. Otherwise we'll get River Song Redux.
Like the people above me said, if John Hurt really is an incarnation of the Doctor, then it's reasonable to think that he was the result of a regeneration, which would put Peter Capaldi at the 13 position. Moffat could choose to ignore this limit, but I still think that they could do a good storyline around it .

No, he is able to regenerate twelve times, therefore giving him thirteen incarnations, but if Hurt really is the doctors ninth incarnation, it means he'll have used them up after Capaldi. But I think they've retconned this now, I think they've decided to make him immortal. Although what I'd do is instead for the thirteenth (or now twelfths) final episode, bring back the timelords in it, and like they supposedly did with the Master, for some reason they'd give him another thirteen lives, so he could last until doctor 26. And by then, the show probably will have ended or gotten rebooted. (
) Maybe for doing them a great service at some point. Maybe for sacrificing his last incarnation to save the timelords.

Yes well I don't know whether you noticed but the title Doctor Who is neutral. Also, unless I'm very much mistaken, the good Doctor is an alien who can transform its whole body.
I expect at some stage some reference to the Doctor getting a new set of regenerations during the Time War.
