New console room description

I used to post at OG a little, but decided to move on when it closed. However I had to come here to post this as I don't believe there's been any concrete news on the new TARDIS set as yet? My friend works for a company who the BBC outsource a lot of their back office work to, he and a few others were today given a tour of BBC facilities in Wales which included a peek at the new set. He's generously allowed me to post his email to me, obviously any names/ sensitive specifics will be altered!!

I'll keep you all posted with info as I get it - remember you heard it here first!!

Had "the tour" today, managed to get a few photos but they're not the best as we were under pretty close scrutiny as you can imagine - we all had to hand camera phones etc on the way in.

The set is on 2 levels, joined by a spiral staircase, but is not as big as I'd thought. It's apparently finished though sections of it seem to be missing at present. We saw the console room, a lab area, a sort of sitting room area, a fairly long section of corridor leading nowhere and numerous other little nooks and crannies. The console room reminds me of a new and shiny version of the old one, except the roundels are very simple and basic looking, simply spherical dents in the walls.

These new style roundels are featured throughout the whole set, though not on every wall. Back to the console room - mainly golds and silvers and the coral theme has been replaced with a smooth marble like finish. Also the room is not circular, it's a kind of hexagon-joined-to-a-square shape, the hexagon bit containing the console, which to me looked like the same console they've used throughout the series except with new buttons and blinky lights, though apparently it's entirely new. Your beloved hatstand was still there but no sign of the interior doors, also there was no ceiling to the set - could be that these bits are meant to be there but were missing from the set for some reason I suppose.

Apparently the whole set has been designed in a modular way, so things can be moved and double as other parts of the ship. The roundels are different colours in each area, gold for the console room, silver/grey/blue in the lab, brown in the sitting room. The roundels can be removed/swapped out or even turned around completely to be convex rather than concave, in order to become a different area. I'll forward some photos and more info shortly...
Sounds really busy looking

interesting but it could be a fake, until I see photos that I dont think we will see anytime soon, im taking this with some salt

What should this "new desktop" be called? "TARDIS BASIC"? I kinda liked "Coral" :) Although "Leopard skin" sounds nice and tacky.

TBH I wonder what will happen when the BBC reads this, would not be surprised if this cost someone there job, assuming its true of course.

GB have deleted the thread in which the TARDIS description appeared (at the request of their BBC paymasters no doubt); which pretty much guarantees that it's correct.

The same sort of thing always happened back when it was OG, whenever any genuinely interesting true spoilers appeared.

The accusations of "bottle show" don't wash with me. We saw plenty of interiors of the TARDIS in the 63-89 series and they only did a single bottle show in 26 years. The new series is actually overdue for one (not counting stuff like Time Crash).

Assuming the report is true (GB could also have taken it down because it was bogus - anyone ever thought of that?) it could mean that Moffat is planning to allow more of the TARDIS to be shown than just the control room and the wardrobe. That's not a bad thing at all. One of my few criticisms of the RTD era is that he never really allowed to show to indicate really how huge the TARDIS is on the inside. Lots of newcomers probably think it only has two rooms and a storage area below, when we know from The Invasion of Time that he's also got some power plants and a public swimming bath down there, too! ;)

Their Spoiler Forum is full of dozens of threads in which people claim to be giving out real information, none of which ever get deleted.

The last time this happened was when info on Davros and the Red Dalek was posted.

I would not mind seeing more of the TARDIS, but its not like its going to become a Star Trek style "bottle show" set almost exclusively on the ship, and when not on the ship, on fairly bland cheap looking sets.

From the description, it doesn't sound too busy to me. I think it's impossible to tell from the description. There's not too much in there to say what "style" it would be. Does it harken back to the original series as the exterior would suggest. Don't really know. It does sound more extensive, more rooms, which I like!

I agree that there should be more indication of what's inside the TARDIS in the show. I would love to have at least one episode entirely within it. I loved when Tom Baker walked forever in the TARDIS once. I remember one scene when he peeks into a well furnished room with ONE pair of boots on the oriental carpet. When asked, he says, "Boot closet." and moves on!

far be it for me to judge Classic Who, but that sounds like a really boring episode.

Yeah, because that's what the entire episode was about. Tom Baker walking around the TARDIS.

To be honest, I wonder why the BBC would replace a (seemingly) perfectly functional and very-expensive looking set, just to appease the aesthetic preferences of a new show-runner.

Also, if the TARDIS is changed, but nothing is done about the current godawful Who logo, I'll scream.

Maybe because they didn't.

The current or rather old set was not built to stand up to HD scrutiny and was already in need of regular patching and repair by the time S4 came around.

To bring a five year old, increasingly shabby set up to high definition standards mainly.

That was only in the first about five minutes of that ep. the rest of it was mainly on location.

the use of the word "forever" suggests that he spent alot of time walking though the TARDIS.

I hate my own guts for needed to ask this, because I have always known more about Dr. Who than anyone I was physically acquainted with, but what episode are you guys referring to?
