New Companion Rumour

My impression of "the new girl" so far is some kind of mix of Rose and Martha (or Donna) for some reason. And am I the only one who gets a "one series only companion" vibe?

I think the fact that she's likely to be a one season only companion may have factored into the equation. I'm guessing the remit was for someone fairly cheap who also would be happy with just doing one year. Although at the end of the day we don't know Capaldi is stepping down so for all we know Chibnall's era may start with Twelve and Bill in place, I doubt it but anything's possible. Its not beyond the realms of possibility that they could spin her off into Class I guess.

I've also been wondering whether the choice of a fairly generic companion played by a relative unknown might be a deliberate ploy to focus more heavily on the Doctor given this is (probably) Capaldi's last hurrah? Have to say the best bit about that clip was Capaldi.

If she is from the 80s I don't see the point, but that might be because the 80s doesn't seem that long ago for me, for the average 8 year old it'll probably feel like Victorian times ;)

I thought the preview was OK. That format isn't the best way to introduce a new companion though. You want to know what her character is like, not just what she looks like. And, no short preview like that can do a character justice. But, it was OK for what it was.

It may have been a trial balloon too. Do people see her constant questions more as childlike innocence/wonder, or do they find it annoying? I guess the answer is more annoying--so hopefully they'll play that down!

If I was watching DW in the 80s, which I was, and they had a companion from the 50s, I would've thought they were from an ancient time!! That's same difference in time as we're talking here if she is in fact from the 80s!

I kind of doubt that myself. I think she'll be around for at least two, especially if Capaldi leaves with Moffat, in which she'll then transition with the next Doctor.

I suspect she's probably only contracted for one season with an option to do a second. Whether she returns for another season likely depends on a variety of factors, does she want to return? Does Chibnall want a returning companion or does he want to start with a blank slate? Likely other things as well.

Or maybe Chibnall will add a second companion and phase Bill out bit by bit? I always liked the dynamics whenever there were two or more companions.

And do people like her? If Bill's a resounding success it might be hard not to carry her over. Of course in the classic series both Doctors and Companions bridged show runners, in the modern era we've only had one changeover which resulted in a blank slate, but that doesn't mean it always have to, especially given that my understanding is that Moffat would have been more than happy if Tennant had stayed on, plus there was no companion to carry over because of the specials/gap year.

Watching (classic TV) Ace, she gets more ridiculous as time goes by.

Despite Sophie being 25, I'm finding it hard to see Ace as a worldly 15 year old any more.

Lets laugh at the phrase "worldly 15 year old" for a while.

Moffat is, by nature, a sitcom writer. He can't help it.

That's actually one of my favorite things about him & his run on the series. I'll take Moffat the sitcom writer over RTD the soap opera writer any day of the week! Moffat is just a funny guy. His regular 1-page column is the highlight of every issue of "Doctor Who Magazine." I kinda hope that he keeps writing it even after he stops writing for the series.

I hope she is from the 80s, at least that would be vaguely different from a fully contemporary companion.

Agreed. Perhaps 1989, since that's such a symbolic year for Doctor Who.

But anyway, I was thinking, it would be interesting if Bill starts out as cheerful and flippant, but after coming face to face with the Daleks and other aliens comes out changed. More cynical and what not. Maybe at the end of her tenure she'd even wonder if she was really a better person for the adventures, or worse.

Could be interesting.

Agreed. But she served as an effective foil & straight man for Capaldi. I'm not necessarily sold on her as a character but the dynamic & chemistry between her & Capaldi seems fun! I'm looking forward to more of that.

Agreed. My favorite eras, companion-wise, are almost all multi-companion eras: Ian, Barbara, & Susan/Vicki; Jamie & Zoe; Sarah Jane & Harry; Amy & Rory (with bonus points whenever they added River).

Nah... And River... Dear god - thank god that character has been written off almost completely now. The best companion in the history of the show is, of course, Sexy
