New Companion Rumour

I don't watch Eastenders so I don't have much of a view on her acting abilities but I agree, it would be nice to get something different and in particular to have a South Asian companion.

Whoever it is I do wonder if there's any possibility of them continuing beyond the Moffat era if they're popular?

RTD and Moffat both got to start with clean slates so I imagine Chibnal will get the same. Much easier to generate interest by selling it as a New Era. (And I think they're going to have problems promoting Series 10 since Moffat's already had the Grand Finale for his era and wrapped up all of his onging storylines.)

I like the thought of Rakhee being a companion. I watch EastEnders, and her character Shabnam had so much misey thrown at her last year. It was all played brilliantly though, particularly her stillbirth storyline.

Unless Chibnal has a hand in the companion's casting? It seems unlikely. Strictly speaking they haven't officially announced that Capaldi is leaving yet have they? I mean Moffat did explore the notion of Tennant staying for Series 5 initially didn't he? I appreciate it's highly unlikely Capaldi will go on beyond S10, especially given he's nowhere near as popular as Tennant was.

Series 10 might be very good, Moffat unencumbered by much of the baggage of his era and not having to worry about setting anything up for the future? It might be a breath of fresh air, a last hurrah, or it could be a trifle meaningless I guess as well. I'm looking forward to it anyway and will hope for the former.

I've wondered about this as well. If Moffat wasn't so worried about continuing convoluted story lines and starting new ones, maybe he'll just focus on telling good stories? If so, he might have a particularly good year. I'm looking forward to S10 as I do every series, but we may have more reason to be hopeful this time.

If this turns out to be true, I approve. It's about time there was a South Asian companion on the show. There have been a few one-off characters and that girl in The God Complex, but it would be nice to see someone that isn't white again, as well as a bit older.

To get away from a contemporary British companion, how does a near-future Indian astronaut sound? The next series is rumoured to be more space-set than before, so it would be a good fit.

I'm all for progressive casting and Dr. Who has done quite well with it. A Hindi companion would be awesome or better yet someone middle-eastern. I would root for a man for the next companion just for the freshness of it all. Rory was kinda a companion but he really wasn't, Amy was the companion and a dang good one.

I'm also in the camp for Chibnal having the opportunity to create his own interpretation of the Doctor and his companion. It would be odd to have Moffat create a new companion and leave he/she around when the new showrunner has to deal with it. Not cool, clean slate should be the thing for a new showrunner IMO.

Speaking as an actor, I do like the opportunity of playing the same role under different direction. I speak from stage experience only, but it's fun to do a role in a play and then to do the role in the same play directed by someone else. It allows me as an actor to flex a bit as well as work with new talent.

Maybe we're spoiled by the NuWho history, but in classic Who several Doctors did go through different lead writers / producers and came out well for it. Tom Baker could arguably be the best example by his own longevity through several rounds of this, with both high and low points (and near legendary conflicts with lots of them) included. As it stands, I think the only real example in NuWho would be the episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures which had RTD writing the Eleventh Doctor, and you could clearly sense that he was just sticking to his mantra of writing "The Doctor" and letting the actor take it from there.

I would like to see Capaldi do a year with Chibnall, to see what one Doctor would fare without the tropes of a single writer. The latter would certainly work to avoid being a John Nathan Turner to a Tom Baker...

I'd like to see Capaldi's Doctor under another showrunner too but I strongly suspect that he will exit with Moffat.

"Capaldi hints it's someone he's worked with." This apparently rules out the Eastenders actress, so any thoughts who this could be? Also, BBC can't sit on something like this for long, so when can we expect the official announcement?

Time to start digging through his credits on IMDB for suitable actresses. It's not going to be Ruth Negga sadly since she's doing 'Preacher'. Has The Musketeers been cancelled yet? There's a few possibilities in there. (Big Finish would love it if it was Lisa Greenwood.)

I wonder if it's Ingrid Oliver. I know that Moffat ruled her out earlier -- some nonsense how she wouldn't interest non-fans and would be difficult to promote in relaunching the series -- but there's a specific reason why I think she's a strong possibility. Sadly, I'm not at liberty to explain what that reason is. :(

Turns out to have been a bad translation. What he actually said was that he'd met them before not worked with them before.

So it's back to being pretty much anybody again.

So now we infiltrate Capaldi's social circles and find out which acquaintance of his who acts is talking about a large role to have just come her way but isn't talking about what it is.

Okay, on a more serious note, anyone thinking we might get an announcement say Thursday, before everyone goes on long weekend for Easter. "And now Doctor Who's new companion, who you won't meet until next Easter."
