New Companion Being Revealed Tomorrow (21st) at 10.30am

Cute is down a bit on the list of requirements for my tastes.
But it's still on your list.

Only because seeing hideous, nausea inducing people isn't how I like to spend my limited TV watching hours.

A believable, well written character and acting ability come before "cute"..

Well, since we don't know anything about the character or acting ability, forgive us for commenting on what we do currently know.

I didn't think you needed my forgiveness but, since you asked, ok, you're forgiven. ;)

So are Amy and Rory not in the entire season, or is the new companion joining them?

It was announced long ago that they'd be leaving partway through the series. Karen Gillan starts shooting a film in May so a bit of rough math would suggest they'll be in the first five episodes.

That said I figured the show would keep us waiting longer than this for the announcement.

If she starts shooting soon they wouldn't have much choice but to announce it now.

Agreed. Better to announce it rather than have paparazzi leak it.
I wondered at first if they were trying to get ahead of a story, say in the Daily Fail or the Daily Mirror, because with the Official Convention just four days away, wouldn't it make sense to announce it there?

But then I realized that would be stupid. You're losing the news cycle to the weekend if you do that, and you're making the announcement to a captive audience that's already into your product.

No, better to make the announcement now and win the news cycle for the day, then roll the actress out at the Official Convention on the weekend (assuming it works with her schedule) and send the audience into the stratosphere.

This IS a suprise! But a welcome one. I just hope she is not another 21st century girl who will have half the episodes centered around her.
AS for older companions, didn't we get that sort of with Catherine Tate? AND she was sort of a household name, and people still did not seem to like her.

I have made my peace with saying goodbye to the Ponds, I just hope River goes with them.

Hmm, well I guess we'll know soon enough. I actually had a hunch we might get a south Asian companion, though sadly probably not Rita from the God Complex. Saw some scuttlebutt earlier that it'll be Browder

Most people warmed to Donna, and I think you'll find she was well liked, certainly she was a far better foil for Tennant than Freema, and much as I adore Karen G I think Donna edges Amy out as my fave new series companion.

Donna is cool, though I remember some criticism at the time she was originally cast as the companion in The Runaway Bride and then again for the 4th season. I was unsure what people thought about her here.

Back on topic:What are the odds the new companion will be asian or african-american?

This is exciting news! I still wish we could have gotten a "household name" like Sofia Myles or Emma Watson though. Oh well, I guess they've done well with no-names before ...

Character over curves, I tend to agree. :-)

And really, no one after Martha has REALLY fancied the Doctor, save River of course. Amy was just horny. I think that particular ship will be left to fanfic writers from now on (rimshot), and Moffat will stick to more traditional friendship type companion relationships. Save River of course.

I have faith that our Mr Moffet will make the right casting choice.

The only thing I'll whinge about is if she turns out to be yet another perky, modern day Brit. C'mon, give us someone from the past, the future, or even*gasp* an alien planet!

However as the Series 7 production schedule runs until the end of the year, if Karen takes a few weeks off to do a movie that doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot. Indeed, Karen made We'll Take Manhattan and Arthur did a play while Series 6 was still in production - they came back in July to finish off Let's Kill Hitler.

All that said, however, they're announcing the new one tomorrow, which means they're probably wanting to jump ahead of the inevitable on-location images that would leak out as soon as they started filming with her. So that could mean a crossover episode, or Karen and Arthur are done now, or it could mean they'll come back in October or something to film their last scenes. Who knows?

Aisling Loftus is a complete unknown to me, so I have no opinion if it ends up being her. Except that I get the urge to giggle a little when I say her name. ;) Jenna-Louise Coleman? Again have no clue who she is (the only Emmerdale Farm actor I know of is Frazer Hines). But note the Sun says "is favorite for role" which means it's just a guess.
