New Animated Show: Star Wars: Forces of Destiny

If I recall correctly (but I don't remember where I read this), the original order was 16 episodes, so this would be the last one for the foreseeable future:

OK, not a new show exactly, but a series of 3 minute youtube shorts featuring heroes from across all eras, from Padme & Ahsoka all the way to Maz & Rey. They're not saying it, but it's pretty clearly aimed at younger girls, which is interesting especially considering they haven't gone all "sparkly stars pink-zone" with it. It's actually quite refreshing in a way.

I have to say, for a franchise that's historically been criticised for being almost exclusively male, they suddenly appear to have a wealth of diverse and interesting cast of female leads. I feel this is no coincidence.

TLDR: technically this means more Clone Wars content and yes, Filloni appears to at least be supervising. Is it canon? Maybe? Probably not. Who cares?! ;)

Cue all of the idiots male fans complaining about there being way too much focus on female characters in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...

This sounds like a great show despite said fans.

It's the 21st century version of Filmation cost-cutting techniques.

Actually, it's not cost cutting, and is better than whatever Filmation came out with in the 1970's and 80's, especially with all of the movement that the characters do (Filmation's animation was as static as frak [IMHO], and then some.)

The Ewok TV show was a Saturday morning cartoon. It was never canon, nor was it meant to be (and no, neither was the EU either. No, not ever.)

To be fair to them, the other poster was speaking about the live-action TV movies that aired on TV in North America but were theatrical releases outside North America (Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure, Ewoks: The Battle for Endor ).

I'll never understand this attitude. Eleven year old me would have been delighted if girls my age had enjoyed Star Wars as much as I did.

I loved 'Battle for Endor' when I was a kid and finally got around to picking them both up on DVD a few years ago. Holy shit, 8 year old me must have been easily entertained because they're sooo bad.
As for the canon thing; I know the official line is that it takes place before RotJ, but honestly I never took that all that seriously. They're clearly just a little fairytale type stories for young children and attempting to fit them into a larger continuity just doesn't hold up to close scrutiny. They work best on their own, just like the Ewok and Droids cartoons.

I don't understand it either, especially with all of the female characters that have been in the franchise from 1977 onward besides Leia, Aunt Beru, Mon Mothma (all of the ones mentioned in the 1977-1983 Marvel Comics title like Dani, Lumiya, Salla Zend from the Dark Horse comics titles, and any of the characters from the EU/Legends novels, plus any characters from video games.)

Actually, Cindel (from the same two Ewok movies) was brought into the wider continuity all grown up as a news reporter, and the bad guys of the second movie were also brought into the continuity.

It's what modern budget animation looks like. Obviously technology gives you more than what Filmation could accomplish in the 70s with traditional animation, but flash animation is bargain basement. That doesn't mean there's no artistic merit to it, but with animation you're only ever going to get what you're willing to pay for.

Oh I'm aware. Just saying the movies in and of themselves don't really fit so well once you examine the details and honestly, I'm just fine with that. Personally I rather like the idea that not everything needs to fit in somewhere. Not every tale of Robin Hood, King Arthur or the Norse pantheon need to be consistent with each other and indeed, many are flat out contradictory. That doesn't make any of them any less valuable or relevant. Indeed, I've found an overemphasis on continuity over storytelling does more harm than good over the long run.
In the case of Star Wars it's all being told retrospectively anyway, so there's always the unreliable narrator factor.

The quality and art design of the animation is decent given the format. This is not a show of one or two dozen 20-30 minute episodes intended primarily for TV or a service like Netflix or something. It's a series of short, contained vignettes meant to be viewed on the likes of youtube and aimed at a young, mostly female audience while supporting a line of products also aimed at that same demographic.
So yes, the animation is simple, the colours bright and friendly. But it's still Star Wars.

206 has my attention. Unless I'm forgetting something, this may be the first bit of canon narrative we've gotten that's set between tESB & RotJ. Possible origin for the Boushh disguise perhaps?

207 - one of the things is not like the other...
Meaning it's the first episode to not center on, or even feature, a female character? I noticed that too. I really don't have a problem with them expanding their format a little bit. Plenty of stories to tell.

Yeah, that surprised me too, but I don't mind the occaisional episode focused on a guy as long they don't outnumber the ones focused on the women.

I was just about to ask about this.
I was a bit disappointed when I was walking through the girl's toys at my Wal-Mart and I noticed they have apparently pulled all of the Force of Destiny toys.
