Wait...what happened? If really a dual, then why is the Squigs still around? And why does a Google search for "MollyRoger ICW" turn up hits for a member on another forum?

Or are we just banning based on presumed dual due to similar IP addresses or some such?

I have no idea what's going on. I had nothing to do with Molly.

Molly was hopping between two accounts she was using at the same time: MollyRoger and ipirate65. The admins kept receiving notifications on that, but we didn't decide to act on it yet.

Molly was posting from only one IP address, while ipirate65 was posting from two. One of ipirate65's IP addresses matched one of yours exactly.

Last night, T'Bonz closed the two accounts and considered the warning, which she would have probably entered sometime tonight. After mollymebanzored registered, Timby stepped in.

You can PM Bon about it, and she'll see it tonight, but it looks pretty clear-cut. The IP address matches yours down to the last octet, and you've been among the first to reply to her in several places around the board, so you can imagine how it looks.

You won't be banned for it--longtime users in generally good standing seldom are--but the warning will probably stick.

Longtime users in generally good standing don't register multiple accounts very often. It's usually new users or permabanned users sneaking back in. It's been dealt with on a case-by-case basis for a long time, and it's slowly settled into that general action. We don't want to ban someone who's been around for a long time, for something that's basically a practical joke, especially if they don't have loads of warnings. So we give them a warning and tell them not to do it again.

A dangerous precedent to take.

So this suggests that ipirate65 and Squiggy are duals. I don't know what "hopping between two accounts" means in technical terms, but are we to presume that Squiggy stole an identity or merely cultivated his fiction beginning in 2004?

At any rate, dual-ing is bannable; I didn't realize that being around for a while gave you a free pass. Perhaps it's not good to advertise that unspoken policy.

Indeed. I bet there is more to this. It could get interesting.

I'm sorry, Spiff, but I agree with Tim here. Allowing established people the freedom to pull practical jokes while banning newbies doing the exact same thing smacks of double standards.

No - it's a judgment call - same as everything else.

Well, it's being discussed in a public forum, so the only other option is to clam up and be mysterious about it and enjoy the "douchey" comments, or I could lie. I prefer to be straight about it.

Needless to say, anyone reading that and deciding to take advantage of it may not receive just a warning; Bon might ban them. I'm just telling you what's been done up to this point.

Is it concievable that if Molly had the same IP as Squiggy that she could've been in his area and piggy-backing on his Wi-Fi?

I probably should point out that this pirate person is posting in fora I never post in at times I was already logged in under Squiggy. Not that it matters. The IP can never lie or be manipulated, can it?

ETA: Douchiness rescinded. I didn't know she was dualing.

It's T'Bonz's policy. While I'm sure Squiggy appreciates the argument that he ought to be permabanned, I tend to agree with Bonz on it. Users who have been here a few years get more of the benefit of the doubt than someone who's been here two weeks.

It's a judgment call, like Misfit Toy said.

I've always thought of Squiggy as a stand-up guy, the kind to take his lumps in public and cop to whatever he's done.

It's hard to argue with an IP address, unless it's another person at Squiggy's residence, which is possible.

Molly's story did start to get a bit outlandish, though.

I don't know what else to tell you. What else can we go on?

To be honest, when she first showed up and we saw the IP match, I thought she might be your fiancée registering an account until she said she was 18, etc.

MollyRoger and ipirate could easily be duals. Some oddity to the former's story with a posting history that begins just after the latter's--and in the same thread.

Don't know what to say about Squiggy's alleged involvement, if it's even the case.

One thing I've learned is not just to believe what people tell me--on any side of an issue--without some evidence provided.
