Never-before-aired 'Star Trek' pilot to be released

The Squire of Gothos

From The Live Feed;

"Star Trek" fans know there were, in effect, a couple pilots for the original series.

The first, "The Cage," was rejected by NBC for being "too cerebral" (ah, some things never change).

The second, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," replaced the actor who played the captain with William Shatner and was more action driven. That pilot had an alternate version which was largely lost and has never aired. Apparently, a film collector in Germany acquired the print and "recently brought it to the attention" of CBS/Paramount. CBS is now releasing this version on Blu-ray Dec. 15.

The alternate version is in three parts with 1970s-style act breaks, an entirely different version of Captain James T. Kirk's opening monologue ("But now a new task. A probe out into where no man has gone before") and music that contrasts from the famous opening theme and an extended action sequence.

I did a search for this before I posted, don't jump down my throat if it's on here already! :)

Might this by any chance be about the original unaired version of the second pilot?

This is great.
I don't like the music, but that intro really is so f'ing oldschool and awesome. WNMHGB is a timeless classic.
This release is with remastered FX, right?

Remastered FX? You're talking about two different things. The "Remastered" in "Star Trek Remastered" has nothing to do with the new FX. It's referring to the HD transfer. The added FX are simply that, added FX.

WNMHGB won't necessarily be remastered (new transfer) or contain any new FX. The Twilight Zone was remastered in HD (although only released on DVD, unfortunately) and the season one set included the original pilot episode, which, like WNMHGB, was a little different from the aired version of the episode. Compare it to the remastered aired version and it's pretty obviously of inferior quality, meaning they didn't remaster it the way they did the aired episode.

They may well remaster WNMHGB in HD, but it really won't kill me if they don't.

I've had a bootleg version of this on VHS for years. Other than the way the acts are structured, and that opening, the differences are pretty minor. Still, it'll be nice to have a "proper" release of this, as my tape's getting rather old :)

It has been confirmed that the 'unaired' version WILL be in HD with full clean-up like all the other episodes received.

So this will NOT be some crappy version slapped onto the set as a quick bonus. They did the full color correction and frame by frame clean-up.
It will probably NOT have any of the upgraded FX ala' the other episodes because they made no mention of that in the press release.

Ditto, on all points. I still may do a transfer to DVD, since it'll be a while before I can manage to get a Blu-Ray player (probably in the form of a PS3).

^^Do ypu want a PS3 and are saving up or do you not want any of the dozens that are now under $150 by all companies.

This 'black friday', even name brand models will be going for between $99 & $150.

Just got a loaded Pansonic for $229---only because i needed a certain output that is rare. I could have got the next Panasonic model down for $150----and that would NOT have been a stripped down model by any sretch.

Lemme put it this way: I have no job at present, so a PS3 might as well be a brand new Ford Mustang, but I do have access to a tv studio where, if it's not being used by a class, I can copy off a VHS onto DVD with very little effort.

I have to say that my only problem with this particular style of editing in regards to the story telling is that its just too structured for me, I prefer the looser and freer style that they went with. Other than that its still the second pilot.

Crap. I stayed up ALL NIGHT to watch The Cage at 2 in the morning, cause that was the first time it aired on TV in whole. Now I hear about this?

I'm extatic, in other words. Can't Wait!

Well if you have no job---why do you want the $300 PS3 when you could get a good Blu-ray player for $100-$150 just after Thanksgiving??

Unless, of course, you are interested in the gaming aspect---which I was not.
