Netflix’s Lost in Space Season 2

The "Hungry Sea" comparison occurred to me as well. Although that was just the Chariot, not the whole ship.

If only they had a bigger budget in 1965...

Plus, of course, in the original pilot, the intent was that the ship was permanently abandoned, since the shifting climate would render the crash site uninhabitable. So once they left in the Chariot, they weren't going to come back. It was a wise move from a production standpoint to rework it so that they did keep the standing sets of the ship interior, even if it meant making the science of the planet's orbit rather nonsensical.

not to mention family friendly. You can still have adult/important themes and still be accessible to the PG/PG13 crowd.

Yes, that too. I almost mentioned it. I feel so many shows these days are too dark for children, so it's nice to have something wholesome again. The nice thing about this show is that it strikes a good balance.

I love the remake and enjoyed every little twist and homage on the original series. Even the use of the John Williams third season theme in the credits and the "racing with the fuel" sequence, which is hugely exciting.

I really enjoy this version of "Smith." As much as it's pretty easy to say "they would have spaced her by now" I never got that. A person of sound moral character would never find it easy to take human life that way. I've had the same discussions about the original series with fans. They discussed leaving him behind a few times and maybe Don, when he was pissed enough, was ready to brain him, but nope, they're good people and it's hard to kill a person. Especially when it's not in defense of an active attack.

I agree -- no decent person should find it easy to kill. Although in the original show, they could've just stuck Smith in a cryotube. I think they were actually going to try that at one point in the opening arc, but decided against it because Smith saved Maureen and they realized they needed a doctor. Or something like that.

Of course, I don't think the new "Smith" has any real medical expertise to offer, and I don't recall if they have cryotubes. So I'm curious to see how they cope with that issue.

They did actually keep him in there during the crash and subsequent search for John until the robot freed him at the back half of "Island in the Sky." Smith then talked his way out of any punishment by being the only person able to control the robot at that point and them needing him to use the mechanical man to take environmental readings. After that, he just kept BS'ing his way out of everything until he was strictly played for comedy and it didn't matter anymore.

However, there is a wonderful moment in the otherwise pedestrian "Wild Adventure" early in season 2 where Don argues to let Smith float around in space rather than use their remaining fuel to get home. When Don asks why they should risk everything for him, Maureen says, "because he's a human being." That sums up the Robinson's philosophy and then Don comes back in his spacesuit and says "someone has to go out and haul him back in." At that point, you can tell Don has cooled down and saw she was right. As ridiculous as the series got, the heart was always there.

Right. The decision whether to save another person isn't about how moral they are, it's about how moral you choose to be.

Decided to start my rewatch of season 1 tonight in preparation for Season 2 next week. I remember really loving this show, but I haven't seen it in nearly 2 years. I need to be reminded about what actually happened. The only thing I remember is they were fighting the robot and got transported to an unknown part of the galaxy, and that Season 1 really served as a "prequel" of sorts to being "Lost in Space".

I see it as similar in structure to the original show, where they spent the whole first season stuck on one planet, then moved to another at the start of the second season.

In this case, it's like they've gone from being Lost in Space to Even Loster in Space.

I'm watching episode 3 of the first season and I love Penny. She's totally a teenager, snide comments and all. It's actually kind of funny.

3 episodes into season 1. Loving this show. Didn't think I would, don't know why. But I'm hooked!

oh, it's coming on christmas eve!.... happy merry christmas.
